I’m not sure if the comments about Herbert busting if he played here are accurate. The coach his first year got fired and Herbert still performed at an elite level as a rookie. Sometimes talent trumps coaching. I’ll admit that Lynn is a better coach than rhule. That’s not even up for debate but I think that point still stands. The Chargers spent this season without Philip Rivers, who was the Chargers' quarterback since 2004. Rookie quarterback Justin Herbert started 15 games for the Chargers in 2020 and totaled 31 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on 66.6% completion.

Tepper called Rhule his Chuck Knoll. He comes from the Steelers who notoriously give their coaches plenty of time to figure things out. This has more to do with pride than money for Tepper.

I thought he was gonna be good after the 2020 chiefs game. That was extremely good coaching and it was his game decisions that kept us in that game we had no business being in. When we traded for Darnold I knew it was gonna be a disaster.
