There are different layers to it. Darnold’s turnover issues were apparent at USC and continued in the pros. Both fields and Lance at WORST have the same talent level as Sam the college prospect but it’s apparent they know how to protect the football. Fields is far and away more talented then Sam has ever been at any point. So if we passed on fields because of Sam I’d be pretty disappointed. It is a crapshoot overall but there are different degrees of it. Which can be debated.

Yeah and even if I think it’s highly more skewered to him not succeeding doesn’t mean I don’t want him to succeed. If he somehow became a franchise qb we are in such great shape without giving up multiple firsts/players for that position. I’ll be rooting for him hard. Everything that has come out from the Jets is that he was loved there and works very hard.

This place loves to hang onto outliers to justify moves. The odds are heavily stacked against Darnold and if you mention this they attack you for being a pessimist when it’s just living in reality. if people would cut off emotions and try to look at moves from an outside perspective rather then as a hardcore fan of this team they’d be better off instead of setting themselves up for immense disappointment. That’s not to say Darnold without a doubt can’t be good for this team. He could, but history shows the odds are insanely stacked against him. I dunno how anyone can feel optimistic about this franchise right now. We suck. Last winning season coming in 2017. I think rhule is a good coach but they need to figure out this qb situation quickly because before they know it it’ll be half a decade without a franchise qb and their asses will be on the hot seat.

Probably what everyone else says about Sam. That he’s a great dude and an extremely hard worker.

Breer talks about Gase (and Tannehill; oh, and Darnold)

Totally on board with him or slater if fields or Lance are not there at 8. I give Darnold a 10% chance we turn him into a franchise qb here. magic ball, I think all 4 top ten qbs are gone by 8, including Sewell and we pick slater. He’s a great football player. -

Darnold hasn’t ever played at a high level and he’s never played an entire nfl season. Those are red flags no matter what way you wanna spin it. -

It’s a pattern. Some of y’all look at outliers way too much and think that somehow this player will be the same. And it doesn’t matter what body part. If a player is getting banged up and missing games year after year it means they can’t hold up in the nfl. I don’t hold it against them as far as thinking they’re soft. Football is a violent game. like Matt rhule even said being available is an extremely important part of playing in the nfl. Because it’s true. -
Need a backup plan to cmc in case of injury. I don’t expect cmc to play a full season anymore. Hope I’m wrong but need a plug and play guy in case he goes down again.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/why-panthers-fans-shouldn-t-be-optimistic-that-sam-darnold-s-problems-are-fixable/ar-BB1fopBj?ocid=msedgntp this is a sobering read. He was ranked dead last as a starting qb WITH a clean pocket. “That’s one thing that stands out when watching Darnold’s film. He’s not really the gunslinger he’s made out to be. There’s a reason why his highlights are always out-of-structure: In structure, he’s terribly conservative. Gase was criticized for his painfully horizontal offense, but have we considered the possibility that it was a result of Darnold’s own limitations as a passer? Those short throws were the only ones he was actually capable of making at an above-average rate…” since he was really good at those short throws I hope that he will fit into this offense well by getting the ball to our legit YAC playmakers quickly. That’s why I think he’s gonna have a career year. But, teddy did that well also. He has a cannon to go deep and does some good things off-script that teddy didn’t have the ability to do. But he also does mind numbingly stupid throws off script as well. And our oline isn’t that great either. The coaches are gonna have to coach the poo out of him. -

I said in the prediction thread that I think Darnold is gonna have a career year, which isn’t saying a whole lot considering he’s had very pedestrian numbers. Brady’s system is very qb friendly and we have legit weapons. I can understand people not including his 3rd year in evaluation of him because that team was tanking. I just think that 3rd year should’ve not allowed a 2nd round pick to be on the table for us to give away even if I understand that we needed to do something at qb because we don’t have a whole lot of options. the big thing, like teddy, is he is gonna be put in situations where he needs to come through in the 4th quarter. Make big plays in big time moments. That’s gonna be the ultimate evaluation for him next year. The optimistic side for me would be he performs well but not at the level of a true franchise qb. Maybe he’ll have trade value and we can package something to move up in the draft next year if there is a qb we like. I just think all of this is highly unlikely though. also another huge red flag is this dude has never played a full season healthy. -

1 super bowl win? I’d take that. -

defense was great but Cam had one of the best seasons by a qb in nfl history in 2015. He without a doubt carried the team to the Super Bowl. What I mean by that is that 15 squad had no business being as dominant as they were. Our defense was really good with turnovers. The offense was basically nobodies and old Stewart. How many times did that defense let teams come back into games before Cam sealed the deal? https://www.google.com/amp/s/ftw.usatoday.com/2016/02/cam-newton-carolina-panthers-mvp-statistics-history/amp go through the picture stats in this article. They are mind boggling. -

I said as much that to get anything remotely good out of Sam we’re gonna have to take all the pressure off of him. Which isn’t what I want in a franchise qb. But we traded a second rounder for him so might as well put the training wheels on and see if he gets more confident and comfortable before asking for more. -
I thought it was common knowledge that Rhule is an asshole. Pretty sure he worships bill parcells so that makes sense.
-
I’m neutral at this point. If the panthers sit tight and pass on a qb in round 1 and that qb goes on to have success and darnold doesn’t that is gonna set us back big time. So they better be sure. It’s a big time decision that can affect whether rhule lasts here or not. That’s basically what I said.
-
I’m not sure if that’s really the case only because teddy couldn’t push the ball downfield consistently. Burrow definitely did at LSU. If you have a guy with an arm you definitely need to take shots downfield consistently. Just at appropriate times. Teddy missed DJ wide open downfield so many times last season. So we were definitely running those routes. And I think it wasn’t that he didn’t see him, he literally couldn’t throw the ball to him.
-
I think the biggest thing for Sam is taking the pressure off of him to make the big play. He was asked to make poo happen out of nothing with that talent deficient team. We have playmakers. Yes I want him taking chances downfield but he makes too many mistakes when he tries to play hero ball. He needs to figure out when and where to take those chances. If you watch some of his games as a Jet there are absolutely inexcusable throws that he cannot make. I don’t like this trade because we gave up a 2nd rounder for a guy who threw 9 tds last season. That’s just not good. Regardless of coaching or talent deficiencies when he’s got as much talent as he has. And I don’t think we can correct his really bad habits in 2 years. Nobody can tell me that as bad as that coaching staff with the Jets was that they were not harping on him not making those types of throws. It’s just instinctual and bad habits for him. Hard to break that.

this seems more like 70/30 mayyyyybe 60/40 if we’re lucky he’s gonna flop here. Just based on his history. The people who are saying Sam is a product of a shitty coach with shitty surrounding talent need to deep dive into his games. He made boneheaded plays even when the line held up and receivers were open. He made terrible decisions and terrible throws. This happened often it’s not just a handful of times. Some of this is because he’s a young player who is raw and learning but some is like you just can’t make those throws ever. Even rookie qbs know not to throw some of the times he did. The talent around him did him no favors which is why I’m even giving him some credit that he could have a career year here. Because we are vastly better offensively. And he can lean on cmc. he reminds me a lot of Favre without the success. He is a gunslinger and can make plays on the move and outside the pocket but sometimes watching him I question his football iq and if any of that can even get better with coaching after 3 years in the league. Bad habits are hard to break. I know Gase was horrible but I don’t believe for a second that the coaches were letting these wtf plays slide.
-
I think he has a career year with us but ultimately isn’t anything. He’s gonna continue to make boneheaded picks at maddening times. I said in the other thread that the coaches need to take all the pressure off of him. The Jets started him right away and put all the pressure on him to play hero ball and he failed spectacularly. If we end up drafting Lance or fields if they fall all bets are off. I could see Fields starting right away and I could see Lance coming in towards the end of the season. One thing about both of those qbs is they protect the football. Sam Darnold does not.
-
Rhule is a good coach but in the nfl if you don’t find a franchise qb you’re gonna be on the hot seat quick. That’s just the way it is with this league. Very difficult to find sustained success without the qb position locked up. And since rhule has a lot of say in the draft then yeah it’s deserved. I might get panned for this but Darnold has almost Mahomes level arm talent and like Mahomes at Texas tech has really suspect mechanics, bailed the pocket often and played backyard football. Mahomes was coached out of that and Darnold wasn’t. Now you can blame gase for this, lack of talent (nobody should mix up chiefs offensive talent to the Jets) but Darnold has not stopped making boneheaded decisions with sloppy mechanics. It’s very hard for me to believe this can get coached out of him at this point. You can’t tell me that the Jets coaching staff wasn’t working with him on some of this at the bare minimum. Bad habits are hard to break and you see players revert back to those bad habits in pressure situations. there are only a handful of qbs in the nfl that can make this type of throw. So the talent is definitely there. But it’s year 4 now and he is still raw as hell. My guess is that this coaching staff needs to take all pressure off of sam and simplify things for him getting the ball to the playmakers quick and really hit home that he can force feed cmc whenever he feels pressure. When the Jets had to have Sam play hero ball, he failed spectacularly. He makes extremely stupid decisions.

Definitely don’t burn it down Jesus. We have good pieces to work with we just need a franchise qb. The problem is they are incredibly hard to find which is why I give this staff until 2023 to get one before they need to go because they can’t evaluate talent or won’t take the risk to get there.
