2 playoff wins in separate seasons. No game winning drives in the playoffs. One season with more than 10 wins. One division championship. 51 losses and 15 game winning drives. That would be a big fat L for any #1 pick in the draft. And the Falcons traded what for that #1 pick? Brad Johnson, Jake Delhomme, and Drew Brees had more success than Vick in the NFC South from 2001 to 2006, and you did not have to blow all that draft capital to get them. Why would you even have low expectations for a 1st round QB nevermind a QB with the #1 pick in the draft? If your expectations are that low, than just wait until the 3rd round to draft a QB.

Vick was a bust for a 1st round pick. Should have been no more than a late 2nd rounder right after Drew Brees. Drew Brees should have been a late 1st rounder like Rodgers. The Chargers got it right with LaDainian Tomlinson and Drew Brees in that draft. Almost got it perfect if they took Steve Smith in the 3rd round. Chargers coaching staff at the time was much like Rhule though with Riley running it into the ground regardless of talent. Malik Willis is more like Akili Smith than he is Michael Vick.

REPORT: Panthers are not interested in Baker Mayfield
CPantherKing replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
No need to suck for one next year. Build the rest of the team and go all in on a pass heavy offense with an available mid to late round QB or unknown potential already in the NFL. You either find a Brady, Warner, Hasselbeck, or Delhomme letting them know this is their one shot. Tell them to prove to us we don't need to draft a QB next year because we found our leader. They have enough of an OL and defense to succeed after this offseason. Drafting a clutch WR with great hands and big play ability would be the one piece they need to add to give the QB 5 receiving targets that will threaten/spread out a defense. At worst, you draft the WR this year in Garrett, Burks, Olave, and Dotson. The team will have the WRs to pair with a QB in next years draft if we can't find that diamond in the rough QB, and hopefully a new coach to go with that 1st round QB. At best, you have a team competing for a championship and franchise leader at QB. My picks for QB in the draft this year are Desmond Ridder if he falls in the draft, Aqeel Glass, or Jack Coan. Rypien and Buechele are my hidden gem picks if the Broncos or Chiefs would give them up for a 5th or 6th round pick. This is the year to give QBs like them an opportunity to take over the team. What's the other option? Getting a known quantity at QB like Cam, Darnold, Walker, or Mayfield and hoping for a mediocre season and a one and done in the playoffs? At best, they get carried by the defense with a shot to win a SB only to look for their upgrade/replacement in 2023. -
Western Michigan, New Hampshire, and Georgia Tech. Stacked up those gaudy numbers and an L. Came crashing back down to Earth the following week against Virginia Tech. Throw Duke in there and the L to Miami... you have your answer to why he had the numbers he did. 1 Game winning drive in the last 2 years. Sounds like a winner in the NFL if you give him one of the best defenses and a schedule full of Lions and Jaguars games. Then he can sit out of the playoffs since he stacked up those meaningless numbers in the season.

Observation: Panthers want to Draft a QB but...
CPantherKing replied to Doc Holiday's topic in Carolina Panthers
QB talent in this draft is very deep. May be the deepest in the last 2 decades. You have many QBs with NFL staying power. The issue is they are of the journeyman/ backup variety. Think Colt McCoy, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Derek Anderson, Jay Cutler, Randall Cunningham, Mitchell Trubisky. Quality back up deep with glimpses of being a franchise starting QB. There could be 10 to 15 quality QB backups out of this draft. The signs are there too with the insane QB trading after seeing/studying these QBs. Several reports from scouts/executives of not seeing a QB with first round talent, let alone top 10 talent continue to be around since November. Five of the top 6 media darlings looked bad in live action against top talent vanilla defenses. The 6th has been rehabbing a serious injury. The media sells their draft and offseason stories on the QBs. So, they are inflating certain QBs to make it look better than it is. If all you do is read/watch stories and the combine, you'd think there was a Watson, Mahomes, or Allen coming out of the first round. One of them comes close, but he has some serious attitude and injury problems. A couple others will be 1st round reaches because teams are desperate and afraid they'll lose them in the 2nd round. -

None of the QBs in this draft are worthy of a 1st round pick- 49 replies

Best QBs in this draft are not on that list. Combine is a joke. Watch film. See how they perform in clutch situations. Make sure they are consistent winners. If those are your standards then you have to scratch Pickett, Willis, and Howell off that list.

Panthers hold prelim talks with Mayfield reps
CPantherKing replied to Jmac's topic in Carolina Panthers
No to Baker! Why is it you can assemble a group of fans from every losing NFL team that can outperform their front office in the draft? "Ever wonder why some teams have more success in the draft than others? It’s simple really. The ones that succeed know what they are looking for. The others are just taking any road." - The Daily Coach, Bill Walsh and the Art of Elimination https://thedailycoach.substack.com/p/bill-walsh-and-the-art-of-elimination-741?s=r -
They should roll the dice on a mid to late round QB or an unknown. This is the moment you can find that Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, or Jake Delhomme while you wait for the obvious first round franchise QB to appear. If the QB isn't good, you are set up for that true 1st round pick QB. If the QB is good, you have your franchise QB and a likely winner with a year of experience under their belt. When I look at this draft I see a deep backup QB draft. If Mitchell Trubisky, Akili Smith, Jim McMahon, Jay Cutler, Randall Cunningham, Colt McCoy, Tom Brady, and Warren Moon all entered the draft at the same time, you would have the 2022 NFL draft. Tom Brady would still go 4th to 6th round when all scouts look at is who looks good on the field. Winners>Looks

Breaking news Pickett has been using Handstenze. Possible performance enhancing supplement? NFL to decide...

2 Beta QBs competing to be an NFL starter. 38 fumbles in 4 years. Not going to get better in the NFL. And that is the least of his problems/red flags. ... and there's more
-
They made a division opponent stronger and kept Watson in the AFC. 3 of their games in 2022. Maybe more if they even think they have a shot at the playoffs. They have to be perfect with that pick package and find impact players that will at least counter what they did for the Colts and Browns to be considered a win. Browns or Texans are going to end up the big losers. Colts and NFC South are the immediate big winners. A lesser package and keeping the Browns and Colts down would have meant the Texans could get back on top quicker. Maybe the Texans surprise and land some of the best players in the NFL Draft.

Matty Water to the Colts for a 3rd rounder.
CPantherKing replied to NCTHFL0567's topic in Carolina Panthers
You realize who they may be targeting, right? Cam Newton -
Avoided Deshaun Watson and moved Matt Ryan to the Colts. Panthers win. Texans lose.

Fitt/McAdoo: Yeah. That's gonna be a problem. Pass. Rhule: That's my QB guys!!! I found him first with Temple. Am I not a genius? He's going to save my career and make me more money. Pickett: I don't want to play for this Fhule. I told him no with Temple. He won't get a clue. Time to screw up my Pro Day.

Obviously all these teams dealing QBs do not think there is a franchise 1st round QB in the bunch. That includes the Panthers who went after Desahun Watson. So, get a QB, just not with a first round pick. It would be like drafting Sam Darnold or Mitchell Trubisky in the 1st round. Use the 1st round pick on an impact player that starts day 1. You'll be sad when you realize Pickett, Willis, Howell, and Strong can't beat out Darnold in year 1. Ridder and Corral are the only QBs in this overhyped group that have a shot at beating out Darnold imo. They should not be taken in the 1st round. Of all the QBs in the draft. Ridder, Corral, Glass, and Coan have the potential to start year 1.

I think you're going to see Devin Lloyd become the centerpiece to Snow's 33 hybrid defense with that 6th pick. Broncos will likely grab Lloyd at 9 so the Panthers can't trade down if they want Lloyd. That allows Shaq to move to his strongest position at the SOLB role where he and Luvu would rotate. Burns and Littleton man the WOLB. Lloyd would pair with Wilson to take care of the MLB position. Having the coverage ability of both Shaq and Lloyd over the middle would let Chinn and Woods play down inside the box more.

YES. Yes he can!

If you want to go for the miracle season, then you draft Garrett Wilson or Treylon Burks in the first round. I prefer Burks, but I'd be happy with Wilson. The Panthers set the team up for the miracle season early in free agency. OL set up well enough. 5 main targets in the passing game. CMC, Wilson, Moore, Anderson, Zylstra. Need a TE who can consistently threaten with 40 targets (Thomas/Tremble were unable to do this in 2021). Need a #2 RB who can catch in the flat (was Ameer Abdullah, but he is gone). Draft a QB late or find one on a roster/street. Light a fire under them and let them know this is their one shot. They have nothing to lose. Go all in with them. Must be a passionate competitor and natural leader. Glass, Coan, Buechele, Rypien, Foles, Hogan , or Bray would do the job, and one of them gets their opportunity to shine. In Foles case, a second time to shine. Go pass heavy all season and take chances. The small pieces in the TE and #2 back in a pass heavy scheme would be the issue. Hooper and Abdullah would have solved this (Maybe OJ Howard). Kyle Rudolph, Jesse James, Melvin Gordon, and Sony Michel are still on the market. Doubt the staff is moving away from Thomas, Tremble, and Hubbard in these roles and it'll cost the Panthers a couple games. Only reason I would draft a WR in the first round is for a shot at a miracle season when the hot seat is burning under the coach.

I heard the same thing, but I don't trust that source. Sources gonna source lol If you're going to poach QBs because there is not an obvious one, you poach from the Bill Walsh tree. Walsh to Holmgren and now Reid. Same reason I wanted Mark Brunnell and Kurt Warner in 1995 instead of Kerry Collins. I wanted McNair/Brunnell/Warner, Warren Sapp, Ty Law, and Derrick Brooks to start the franchise. Instead, we got Kerry Collins, Tyrone Poole, Blake Brockermeyer, and Shawn King. That gives you Buechele, Foles, Hogan, and Bray. Nothing flashy, but QBs who can win like Brunnell and Warner. Role the dice on one or two of them when you don't see anything great because everything is just flash and fluff. Buechele is being protected by Reid. Foles is on the Bears roster and may be traded. Hogan is on the Titans roster. Titans would be better if they got over Tannehill and went with Hogan. Bray is on the street just like Kurt Warner going into the 1998 season. Winners>Top Prospects (eye candy) 60s: Unitas>Namath 70s: Staubach>Bradshaw 80s: Montana>Elway 90s: Favre>Aikman 2000s: Brady>Manning 2010s: Wilson>Stafford 2020s: TBD? I don't think we will ever learn the lesson history has been teaching us. Everyone likes their shiny QB that looks good over winners and everyone follows the leader.

correction. restructure not re-sign. point stands.

I don't think they re-signed Elf to sit on the bench. He's likely penciled in at starting guard where they wanted him last year. 10 OL on the roster atm. Panthers have Christensen listed as a tackle. Christensen will likely compete with Erving for the starting LT. I wish they would get rid of Erving.

Mariota and Winston? Combined: 138 starts. 76 Ls. 23 game winning drives. They've had their shot. To compare. Stafford: 182 starts. 95 Ls. 42 game winning drives. Good QBs on bad teams are still responsible for 50% of their wins. Next! You want a good overlooked QB on bad teams? Nick Foles: 56 starts. 27 Ls. 13 game winning drives. (on par with Stafford's rate of production at QB) Gardner Minshew: 22 starts. 14 Ls. 4 game winning drives. There is some potential here. The losing % is worrying. Not close to 50%. I'd want to see 12 Ls and 5 game winning drives I'm looking for a QB with a win% above .400 and a w:gwd ratio around 2 or less. Good QB on good teams Tom Brady: 316 starts. 73 Ls. 53 game winning drives. (for comparison)

You sign a SB MLB like Damien Wilson at the age of 29 for experience and mentorship. Possibly temporary starter. The moves point to the Panthers drafting Devin Lloyd or Nakobe Dean. MLB has been the one position they have been silent on as a need and the 1st round championship leaders sitting there for them in Lloyd and Dean. They have addressed the OL. Likely not going OL in 1st round. There is no 1st round QB talent in the draft and there are no signs of moving Darnold. Cam Newton seems to remain an option too. I'm expecting the Panthers to trade down and make the moves to take a LB in the 1st round and then a QB on day 2. LB gets mentored by Wilson and QB competes for the starting job. The defensive signings and roster building feel like Snow is moving primarily to his 33 stack defense from college which he has been messing with the past 2 seasons but has not had the MLB or FS to make it work (they tried to force Shaq and Chinn into these roles and moved them out of position). If the Panthers sign another top safety that can play FS/SS I'm sure we will see the 33 defense used often. They tried using Gilmore in this role as a CB/FS last season, but it just didn't hold up against the run. If they sign another flex safety (say Mathieu... who may or may not be a target): Brown NT, Ioannidis DE(strong), Gross-Matos(weak) Lloyd MLB, Thompson OLB(strong), Burns(weak) FS Mathieu, Chinn SS(strong), Woods SS(weak) CB Horn, Henderson, Jackson Ioannidis can slide to DT, Burns can slide to DE, Chinn can slide to LB on any given play. Snow will have a D that can go from a 44 to a 43 to a 46 to a 34 to a 33 to quarters with an audible. You just need DEs, MLB, and SS who can stop the run while the MLB and SS are able to drop into zone or man coverage for this 33 defense to not get exposed.
