Attacking “glass half full” posters after a loss…
Wundrbread33 replied to Wundrbread33's topic in Carolina Panthers
And then we all have times of weakness. Like after watching our team get bullied for 60 minutes. The following 24 hours or so show that. Fortunately it doesn’t ruin my week like it did when I was younger. That poo sucks and I hope others who let that happen can find their way through it and realize it isn’t that big of a deal. -
Can we discuss Taylor Moton
Wundrbread33 replied to Sean Payton's Vicodin's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yeah I’m thinking his injury may have been one of those that won’t get better until the off-season, so he isn’t 100% but pushing through it. He has shown to be a fantastic RT outside of this year, so I’m not worried about him, and he gets a pass IMO. -

I don’t see those as mutually exclusive. There’s a lot to like about this team currently, while also desiring better moving forward. I’d kill for the offensive creativity of Miami right now for example. But I think it’s okay to want to take the division even if it’s a poo division. I’d love to get to the playoffs, and possibly have a day when our run game and line is clicking and maybe we steal one. poo can happen. I also understand that sometimes you need to go backwards to go forwards (like losing early forcing Tep to fire Rhule). We all want to see the team win, but I don’t watch games hoping we lose. If I’m watching I want a win, and if we lose I can celebrate a better draft pick during the week. -

I mean…sometimes the other guys just have your number. We lost the trenches yesterday. The Steelers did what we try to do, but did it to us, and they did it better. McAdoo is bad. Sam needs to game manage at best. He’s playing like a solid backup should. We can’t get behind in a game. The team, however, responded well after the Bengals ass whooping. Let’s see how they respond to a similar ass whooping, not in score, but in the trenches. It’s not a certainty they were uninspired just because they got beat. poo happens. -

I guess, for me, is that my view/enthusiasm/attitude for this team changed a poo ton after Rhule was fired, and that feeling of liberation hasn’t worn off (for me). Getting rid of him nearly felt like a playoff win in some strange way. Seeing the teams attitude change, and seeing them continue to compete has some positives in it, and yes the division is poo, by hypothetically stumbling into a division title and having a playoff game…that would enhance the Rhule firing even more. Sam has taken care of the ball better than I thought, but this team still lacks a QB and a better play caller at least. I don’t think as many people are seriously delusional enough to see this as a Super Bowl team, but they just want the little wins as they come. One of my favorite teams growing up was the 99’ team, with Beurlein, Moose, Walls, Jeffers. They only went 8-8, but they made it exciting down the stretch. I mean that’s a “failing” year, but it was entertaining and I have good memories of it. So if enjoying something better than our awful Rhule start is delusional, I guess add me to the group. But I don’t think that is accurate. I think delusional is what Cowboys fans have been for the last 20 years. -

Why do you think you do it/why is it fun for you? Are you celebrating a victory (by losing/tanking)? Or are you pissed too and taking it out on others? Some other reason?

I mean the Steelers always beat the poo out of us. And did you hear when they kneeled for the win? This wasn’t a home game for us at all. Never is when they are in town. It’s pitiful.

Brock Purdy and why we don't need to draft a 1st round QB
Wundrbread33 replied to kungfoodude's topic in Carolina Panthers
Man I hate message boards sometimes. Just a bad way to have a discussion. Basically what has happened is one or both of the following: 1. I wasn’t clear enough with what I wanted to say, and didn’t give enough detail/context. 2. You read too fast or missed/skipped around while thinking of your response. I don’t think we really have that much of a disagreement, and if this convo was over a beer, it would have taken 5 minutes to understand each other . -
Brock Purdy and why we don't need to draft a 1st round QB

Yup. Rule of thumb is generally 5ish games of tape and then the wheels fall off. Cool story, but once teams know his tendencies…that’s when we find if he’s legit or not. -

I’ve seen him on the sidelines. Seemed in good spirits. Lisfranc has a lengthy recovery time so the updates will be few and far between, and he’s on IR so those guys, even established veterans kind of fall off the radar for the season. -
Brock Purdy and why we don't need to draft a 1st round QB
Wundrbread33 replied to kungfoodude's topic in Carolina Panthers
It’s not that simple. I also didn’t say I’m putting my eggs in drafting the next Brady. I’ve given reasons in other posts that a 1st round QB could succeed outside of simply being more talented. Because being a 1st round QB does not equal “the most talent.” Hence busts. And historical analysis tells you what happened, but it doesn’t tell you WHY it happened, and it doesn’t tell you what will. It lacks context. Trent Dilfer was a top 10 drafted QB, so his Super Bowl win counts for 1st rounders. But elite generational QB he was not. That’s just an example of context in his case. Manning won a Super Bowl in 2015. Without context, Denver won it because of a 1st round QB. Unfortunately we intimately know the context. It’s just not that simple. It’s far more detailed with far more moving parts than what it appears at surface level. -

Corral is more than talented enough to win with this team. I hope we draft another to compete with him (he does have a tricky injury) and we will be fine. We should have taken a flier on Howell that late in the draft too. -
Brock Purdy and why we don't need to draft a 1st round QB
Wundrbread33 replied to kungfoodude's topic in Carolina Panthers
Are people saying that Purdy is a franchise quarterback and the primary reason for his teams success? I think, rather, what Purdy is showing is that your chance of success is far greater if you build a stout D, a dominant O-line, and fill out the offense with weapons to support a QB. It’s early, but the 49ers are built so their QB only has to be talented enough. He doesn’t have to carry the team by being a generational franchise QB. We did something similar with Jake back in the day. It’s far more likely to win that way, than to hope we draft another Cam. Those guys are too rare. -

Think of the luck involved with most of these QB’s too. Brocks situation. Unlucky for the two guys higher on the depth chart. Lucky for him. Would he have this shot otherwise? They have invested a metric poo ton in Trey Lance. He will (and still will) get every chance to take that job because so much was invested, and so much front office reputation is therefore attached to him. The interesting thought experiment is…how many Brock’s are there, and have been there over the years, that simply didn’t get the chance due to politics? Tom Brady himself got a chance because of an injured starter. Marc Bulger (remember him?) got a chance because of injury too. There’s more to QB success than an obvious talent difference. There is bias/politics/opinion/favoritism that is always involved. It’s only human. Im not even saying don’t draft a guy in the 1st round, but only pointing out that thinking “dude sucks because he was a 5th/6th/7th/UDFA” or “you have to take a QB in round 1 or bust” thinking is far from being the case, and that it’s more complicated than that. -
Brock Purdy and why we don't need to draft a 1st round QB
Wundrbread33 replied to kungfoodude's topic in Carolina Panthers
QB is approached differently than other positions in the draft. You only play 1 QB on Sunday (unless Rhule), so you draft a QB to start, and don’t draft a QB high to back up. So a 1st round QB is one you decided to commit to. You give them every chance. Sometimes a guy slips to the 2nd, and you can commit to them to. Drafting a guy at that point and after to be a backup after seems like a waste of a pick, since you can draft players at other positions who can contribute more, since they can see the field. So what am I trying to say?… The perceived talent difference between a 1st round QB and a 5th round QB is greater than the actual talent difference. Dak is a great example. He had obvious tools, but a team didn’t want to commit to him as “the guy” so he slipped later than his physical talent warranted. Of all the QB’s in college (and there are a poo load of starting QB’s) who are draft eligible, maybe 5-10 get drafted. All these guys have physical ability. The difference is mentality, personality, the amount of commitment they get from their team, and the coaching/team situation they are in. -
49ers have lost only 1 game since CMC joined, and that was the week of the trade against KC. He has taken that offense to another level.

I feel sorry for those who are sad when their team wins. It’s so backwards. If we win out and make the playoffs, some people on this board have already expressed they would be upset about it.
-
Well that’s a cartoonish version of what I said but the mental part of players is a lot of luck. I was speaking generally that just because someone had a scouting/evaluation job doesn't equal to them being great at scouting/evaluation though. There very well may be people here with a better eye for talent, but not the network, experience, and career orientation required to get one of those jobs. Now, specifically the poster you were first talking to? I don’t know poo about them, and that isn’t my battle to fight.
-
Yeah I think that’s as close as it gets. Even the best coaches coach busts. The mental part and personality is so important. But a great coaching staff most certainly would result in less busts, at least in theory. I mean we already are seeing that transitioning from Rhule to Wilks.
-
Because they draft busts all the time. The most important factor for success at this level is something intangible that is impossible to evaluate: The mentality of these young men now, and over the course of their playing careers. These are people with millions of variables that influence them in their day to day life. It’s impossible to predict how they turn out, and it is more luck than anything. You have to draft based on athletic traits and get a feel for their personality/mentality, support them through coaching, and hope for the best, because the rest is out of the Gm/scout/coaches hands. It’s not a slam dunk appealing to authority when the topic is so subjective.

I think some are missing the point. This is framed under the scenario that we make the playoffs, essentially winning out/going 3-1 down the stretch. Sam would theoretically have to continue game managing and not making mistakes, while also making plays happen when needed. It assumes him not being complete ass. In that scenario, that’s a more mature developed Darnold, and therefore the theoretical Darnold the question is asking if you would resign. A Rodneyish Peeteish Darnold I suppose.
