Carolina's oline and WRs are not NFL average right now. No QB will have success with below average pass protection and slow WRs that can't get open consistently or run after the catch. He doesn't trust them, and rightfully so. The only person on offense he really trusts is Theilen. And he's honestly not that good - so far as big play making ability. We don't know what we have in Bryce Young right now. And he isn't playing as bad as ya'll making it out to be. WRs are not making plays. No QB will consistently break 200 yds passing without YAC. Come on Huddle! You can't blame a guy for missing an open WR every now and then, particularly when they're completely blanketed 9 out of 10 times. And then crap on him for missing that 1 time someone actually created a yard or 2 of separation, and his oline isn't allowing a rusher right up the middle within 2 seconds of snapping the ball. Can someone please pull every one of CJ Stroud's drop backs from yesterday? He misses easy throws. He makes bad decisions. He gets tackled easily and even fumbles. He overthrows deep balls of wide open receivers! His receivers get consistent separation. And his oline gives him average to above average pass pro. But he's a rookie, and he'll get better in those areas. So will Bryce Young. You can't cook without the ingredients. He's not Cam or Lamar, where he can take over a game with his legs. Richardson is the only rookie QB that could have done anything with this offense.

If you were GM, how would you use our that first pick in round 2?
Navy_football replied to SCO96's topic in Carolina Panthers
wide receiver is the only answer. our receiving corp needs a jolt or 2 of speed. not just straight line speed either. fast twitch, ankle breaking, route running, take the top off the defense receiver. then do it again with either 3 or 4. interior OL is the other pick. why in the world would anyone want to drop another rookie QB in this mess is beyond me. -
Wow that's tough. He and Jensen have low grades. Well, I can tell you they played significantly better than their predecessors. I thought yesterday's game was the first time Bryce actually had NFL average play from the offensive line.

Honestly didn't have any of your posts specifically in mind. Not sure why you thought I was targetting you but I really wasn't. If I was responding to you, I 100% would have responded to your post/s. Just reading through everythinh and getting a collective sense of the tone.

100% agree, but he's MUCH better in pass pro than Zavala and whoever else was over there - Toth maybe? They were ridiculously bad.
-
Right... The question for me is, why haven't we brought him back sooner? He made a few mistakes, but he wasn't the constant turnstile, they've marching out there for the past 10 weeks. Plus his run blocking was very good.

I thought McCray looked better than anyone else the team has trotted out there at LG all season.
-
Looked to me like Horn was in beginning of the season form and probably conditioning, while TB receivers were in mid-season form and conditioning. And he was on a play count - as he should have been. A CB that hasn't played since week 1 due to an injury requiring surgery will take time to adjust. He looked good enough and I expect he'll only get better - assuming he stays healthy. Why is everything so friggin doom and gloom with you guys? The team is bad. We knew that coming into the season. But now everyone wants to nit pick every player like they're supposed to be perfect every play, every game. Players on opposing teams get paid a lot of money to make plays too. And they do it against teams other than Carolina.

The oline looked sooooo much better after Zavala went down. Toth at LG and Mays at RG were solid. They even helped Bozeman look respectable. Even when Jansen came in, they looked loads better than with Zavala. Though you could tell Bryce didn't trust them. Any hint at interior pressure and he'd bail or look to bail. It took a couple of plays for him to realize that it was better up front and he started to step up in the pocket. Hopefully they build off of this and NEVER go back. Hopefully that gives playcallers the confidence to call more deep routes too.

I can respect that.

No I'm talking strictly pros. Honestly I didn't watch much of him at Alabama, so I really wouldn't even know where to begin discussing that time in his career. I've seen him give LBs and Safeties moves in the open field that left them standing in place - more than a few times. I've seen him lower his shoulder to get 1st downs. I watched him break 2 tackles by defensive linemen that had him in the grasp last Sunday (on the same play), as the pocket completely collapsed, on his way to a first down run. He's not Cam but he's stronger than he looks - particularly because he is really small for a QB. He's not Lamar, but he's elusive in the open field. It's ok not to like him, and still acknowledge what he's done and is able to do. And not just make up in your mind that he can't do anything, at all, ever. It's ok. He's gonna be here for at least another 22 games or so, no matter how he plays. Maybe as fans we can support the positives and be optimistic the negatives will improve with time and help from his coaches, playcallers and team mates.

No I haven't. I have seen him put linebackers and safeties in the matrix though. He's an elusive runner. Stronger than he looks too. Not strong. Just stronger than he looks - if that means anything.
-
I don't know. He's shown himself to be pretty elusive when given a chance to get in space. We'll see.

Was Frank our worst head coach?
Navy_football replied to Panthers Fan 69's topic in Carolina Panthers
I agree with the second part. Cam was best when he wasn't hesitating to run. That's what made him special and a nightmare to defend. Surprisingly elusive for a big bruising runner. Ron should have focussed on securing a quality offensive line in the 5 or 6 good years he had Cam - especially since he inherited an all pro Center that stayed around the entire time. I used to blame Hurney and Gettleman, but he did the same thing in WAS. Started with a great oline, and invested all his resources into the defense - and again he can't keep a QB upright because they're getting murdered on the field. Ron also wouldn't sit Cam whe he was obviously injured. Marched him out there hurt with JAG receivers and a make shift oline. That took years off his career, and is almost unforgivable. -
Zavala to IR, will miss rest of the season
Navy_football replied to Prowler2k18's topic in Carolina Panthers
I know he's a rookie, but he's been Amini-level bad. And that's not some ish you say lightly. -
I'm not sure how anyone can honestly say what we have in Bryce Young right now. From the protection to the receivers to the lack of a running game. How can you possibly make a definitive statement on his ability to win games when the supporting cast on offense is performing at such a horrible level. Maybe he ain't the guy. But comparing him to CJ Stroud right now isn't fair. It just isn't. CJ may be better, but the gap isn't as big as it appears right now.

Derrick Brown is our Franchise player
Navy_football replied to GPantherfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Not only is he not a force in the run game, he's often a liability that is targetted. He's undisciplined with his hand in the dirt - getting too far upfield and creating running lanes. And he's just weak at setting the edge. He does excel at running down the ball from the backside and blowing up slow developing runs though - I'll definitely give him that. -

Agree with all, but this team is not remotely on par with Clausen's Panthers. Gross and Kalil were pro-bowlers. That's your center and left tackle. Throw in Wharton and you have an above average oline. Steve Smith, Double Trouble, heck even Gettis and Jarrett would be an upgrade over what we have on this offense. I think Bryce would look alot better than Clausen did with that offensive cast, even with Frank calling plays. But I 100% agree that he has to start taking shots down field. Maybe he doesn't trust his targets anymore. He took a few early to TMJ and Mingo, but they don't have the ability to go get the ball. Marsette and Strachan desperately need more snaps - if nothing else, to add a threat of speed on the field. -

I think we're seeing the impact interior pressure has on an offense - against the Panthers right now. Sacks aren't needed when you're constantly disrupting plays with the defensive players closest to the QB at the snap. And in our case, we're hardly even slowing them down. -
And that's what I was so excited to see when someone mentioned it after the hiring. Actually scheming guys open instead of, run the route and beat your defender. Steve Smith is the last receiver this team has had that could do that consistently. And that wasn't route running as much as, being faster than the defender and/or outjumping them for the ball at the point of attack.
