Some positivity regarding the current Roster
SetfreexX replied to Kentucky Panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
Almost like the more reps, and practice you get the better you become...another area we wasted reps with a fake competition between him and Brady. -
The biggest thing with even ENTERTAINING trading either is the dead cap and having the receiving tram take on some of that as we already have a negative cap projection for 23'. People need to understand how that functions first, Robbie just signed a restructure this past off-season and we should all understand CMC's contract by now.

Remember the Twitter thread about Wilks and Snow arguing?
SetfreexX replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
I'm pretty sure when Wilks ran the defense after McD left we transitioned to more man + pressures, the heavy zone was under McDermott who was an understudy of Jimmy Johnson in Philly. it's been years since then, but if memory serves that was the case. So even though Wilks as the secondary coach was likely primarily coaching zone it was a result of the defense McDermott wanted to run. We saw Wilks' preference when he took the reigns as it actually started off bad that season, and later I think we ended up finishing in the top 10. Right now front wise we make more sense as a 3-4 or 4-3 over / under fronts as a base, and a 2-4 as our nickel package, hopefully the 3-3-5 stuff we saw is tossed, and we get back to more traditional NFL fronts / personnel packages. 3-4 IDL - Io / McCall / Brown Edge - Burns / YGM / Haynes <<< depending on 3-4 or 43 ILB - Shaq / Wilson / Nickel >>> Smith IMO needs to be paired with Shaq, he's our biggest, and most athletic offball LB'er Corner / SS - We already know who belongs in these spots, I will they need to stop asking Henderson to cover the #1 WR, get Jaycee out of the nickel spot and let him travel whether it's zone or man to each boundary, rotate Henderson, and Hartsfield as the nickel based on packages / offensive personnel, I think they were asking too much of Henderson. Pretty much all the issues with him occurred vs the number one receiver. -
Person: Rhule ran the team at times "like his personal kingdom"
SetfreexX replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
How could they call out the coach that has that much control, risk losing sources, etc. Most of the people that covered the team routinely dropped clues to the disfunction, micro-management, etc. without outright just saying it. -
It's not an ODD move at all, Snow has been Matt Rhule's defensive coordinator since Temple, we're talkin almost 10 years'ish including the time here. Snow was never going to stay once Rhule was shown the door, not to mention Rhule will want him for any college opportunities that may / will arise. I think the requirement to hire coaches with NFL / HC experience was in prep for a day like this, Wilks was a DC and cut his teeth on that side of the ball, and memory serves Al Holcomb has some experience as well.

We don't need to tear down and rebuild we have premium talent at the MOST important positions on this team aside from QB. What this team needs is a QB, and tbf even a rookie doesn't guarantee a change, but it's the natural step. Use the 1st on a QB if high enough, and use the high 2nd to trade back in the second while adding a 3rd and another pick or two in the latter rounds. And as far as guys we could trade for value most of them if not all but Burns who IMO is untouchable all have sizeable dead money. Solve QB, we have the pieces in place to compete.

By god, it’s Marty Hurney’s ghost…
SetfreexX replied to Cary Kollins's topic in Carolina Panthers
They both flew out. -
Drafted when Hurney was here...

Cap is a myth, see Saints, restructures, pushing money as needed. It's not a big deal because next year isn't here yet.
-
3rd round picks in most cases are fringe guys as far as a starter goes and can be replaced via trading back as / if needed. We need a new NFL caliber head coach.

This is EXACTLY what I was going to say, Chuba should have been cut after the PS, and we should have signed a FA as they are not expensive. When we talk about fumbles, missed blocks, dropped passes etc. we have to look at the decisions the COACH makes with the personnel... We split reps with Ickey our 1st round selection number 6 overall with BC and WASTED reps in camp to help speed up his development...why? A 3rd rounder in BC was never going to be him out. We split reps with Baker / Sam, again NO ONE though Sam was going to win, you don't trade for Baker to sit him, so why did we waste those reps. The only other person we really have that's decent at returns is Shi, they had him out there for punts, but not KR, why? We trade for Shenault, we draft TMJ in round 2, we signed a WR that has years of rapport with Baker, and yet we are force feeding Shi Smith....I'm not saying he doesn't have talent, but this is the deepest we've ever been at WR, why are we NOT taking advantage of that? So while I agree with players have to execute, coaches have to 1) have a plan that CAN be executed, and 2) they have to put the players in the best position / environment to execute. To me that is what Rhule has failed at since his time here began, overall we have the same issues we had back in 2020, even with an improved roster.
-
If / when he is fired, promote Wilks, I think he'd relate most to the players and could also take over the defensive play-calling, as you'd have to imagine Snow would leave with Rhule. I think we'd also see a shift in where guys line up on defense, we had Burns drop 15 times into coverage....why? Littleton / Shaq are known more so for their ability to cover why are we LITERALLY dropping our best rusher into coverage....? Do that crap with Luvu or Haynes if you want to disguise a zone pressure.
-
I'd say the roster as a whole has improved, I don't think that could really be denied, the issue is the coaching at this point seems to hold the roster back. The personnel decisions like not playing TMJ / Higgins, keeping Donte' vs paying for Gilmore or Reddick when we have CJ and Jaycee on rookie deals still. Starting Elf over Boze, and to be fair Elf looked better at C, than LG last year and it has continued into this one. Erving over Brady for so long last year at LT. The ''competitions'' in TC wasting time to build chemistry / install the offense with the guys who would actually be on the field on gameday, NO ONE expected Sam to be announced as the starter. IMO that was Rhule trying to save face for a guy IMO he hand picked as Fitterer had only been here roughly 3 to 4 months before that trade was executed.
-
Donte' Jackson....Jeremy Chinn....YGM....were the most recent Hurney 2nd round selections, his history before that is 'meh'.
-
Two years left on a deal for a top 45 pick, part of the negotiation also centers around the fact you have to pay the salary as well. Also JAX had little leverage, so it's all in the hands of the teams that are interested. If you don't like the addition it's whatever, but it's evident looking at the situation / stats / skill set, that we added a player with more potential than a Brandon Zylstra, or Keith Kirkwood. And no one referenced ''bidding war'' you're just using hyperbole to exaggerate the point you are attempting to make. Just like there was interest from several teams in regard to Mims, but the price was too low. JAX decided to get ''something'' versus just releasing him, or keeping him while paying him with no plans for him in the offense.
-
If that were true there would not have been several teams bidding, including us I believe the total was 5 teams. It was a numbers game -- JAX added Marvin Jones, paid Kirk, and also added Zay Jones, and are under a new GM and regime. 600+ yards as a rookie and sophomore in JAX with Minshew, and Trevor under Meyers is solid production. More than we got out of our 2nd round pick TMJ, who I am still high on, the OL + Darnold was just not an environment for an offense to be productive.
-
Rhule imo is the reason we gave up so much for Darnold. Fitt don't seem like the type to get fleeced, look at all the other trades. At that point Fitt had only been here since like Feb or March iirc, move was executed within a couple months. Look how well the Baker deal was navigated, limited draft capital, and we got Baker to give up almost 4M.
-
I could see Sean Chandler at safety being cut, he's a liability in coverage and is behind Chinn, Woods, Burris, Hartsfield, and also Franklin who has sub package LB'er ability. Rolling with just two TE's and an H-Back is not something I see them doing, Sullivan offers more than a depth safety at best in Chandler. Just my .02

Panthers trade for wide receiver Laviska Shenault
SetfreexX replied to joemac's topic in Carolina Panthers
This was the thought I had, jet sweeps, reverses, hands out of the backfield with some carries, he's 6'1 230, almost the same size as Foreman but with a receiver skillet. Get him the ball in space in the short to intermediate with an opportunity to break a tackle or make a guy miss. Dj Robbie TMJ Shi Laviska Higgins That right there is a nice WR room, all young with + talent and inexpensive. Zylstra been solid but what's the potential...it's limited. -
Corral vs the rest of the rookie field
SetfreexX replied to micnificent28's topic in Carolina Panthers
This has probably been said, but I'm not reading all 6 pages lol.... Those other QBs were ''at least'' getting 2nd team reps, ''if not'' also some 1st string reps due to the fact there was only ONE player ahead of them on the depth chart. In the never ending wisdom of Rhule, we decided to SPLIT the 3rd team reps of our 3rd round, traded up for rookie with Rhule's boy from Temple PJ, and wasted his development time even further. THEN we played him behind the freaking 4th string OL backed up in the RZ trying to pass in a meaningless game with under 2 mins left in the pre-season. Just an idiotic decision because they want to try to help PJ catch on somewhere post cuts, and now with Darnold out, he likely sticks, and we see Darnold hit short term IR to start the year. Can't make this poo up. -

Predict the initial 53 man roster for 2022
SetfreexX replied to Evil Hurney's topic in Carolina Panthers
A few notes on the following as denoted in red: I think we are a little to inexperienced at TE, I like Ian and he looked good in his role back in 2018 when filling in for Olsen, a lot is on him right now to shoulder the load. Tommy in year two I expect to improve, but we need a vet for that room, and I'm not against adding a guy like Ebron for depth / experience. I don't think Andre Roberts makes it 'solely' as the returner, Shi Smith has looked good in that role, and seems to have carved himself a place in the offense -- six receivers is enough, can't see a spot for a seventh. I think the writing is on the wall for Brown as he red-shirted last year, and seems to be behind UDFA's like Michael Jordan -- I could see him in favor of Daley a former 6th rounder him self in a slight cap savings move, but it is unlikely as Daley has experience at T / G. _________________________________________________________________________ I set our defense up as a more of a hybrid since we do not run a traditional 4-3, we have a lot of odd fronts, so with that in mind you will see 'Edge' and 'NT / 3T' instead of DE / DT. Luvu is the first one that fits this mold as he plays the 'SLB' or 'Sam' in a 4-3 front, but is also an 'Edge' defender in a 3-4 or other Odd front. So when considering ''Off Ball LB'er'' depth he flexes to that group as needed. Jaycee Horn spent A LOT of time as a 'nickel' defender in the firs three games, and I think most people tend to forget that, with the resurgence seemingly of Henderson, I think we will see more of this. Myles Hartfield also spends a good portion of his time as a 'nickel' DB so I'd anticipate him in this roll as well aside from Safety depth. Burris as a former starter over fringe roster guys like (Chandler / Robinson) seems a better fit, and represents less drop off if he needs to fill in. Sam makes the roster as he can also play sub package LB'er, is one of our best guys on ST's, and has Safety experience as well. ___________________________________________________________________________ Personally I would still like to see more proven players added to the interior DL and Edge position, but I feel very good about our secondary, and honesty our LB'er depth as generally we play 2 at a time in the off-ball position. Receiver, and running back depth is also of quality, and on paper the starting OL looks to be average to above average pending Ickey and BC's growth on the left side. QB for the first time IMO since Cam, has a guy there with ''It'' and not just a ''guy''. I wasn't a Baker homer, and honestly had doubts with him as the #1 overall pick. However you can't knock his resume' it stands up to most starters, and he's clearly an upgrade over the last two full time starters (Teddy / Sam). He took a team that was 1-31 in the two years before him, and helped lead a 7-8-1 season as a rookie, and in his 3rd year got to 11-5 with a playoff win....we haven't had a playoff win since what...2015 as we lost to New Orleans in 2016, didn't make the playoffs in 2017, Cam's arm in 2018, and in 2019 Cam's foot injury. I will pull for Baker, but 7-9 wins is as optimistic as I'll be until we show more on the actual field.
