I understand where Cam is coming from.

We should hire Butch Davis to recruit him. Maybe Cam can give us the number of his bagman.

The huddle is going to implode when he signs with one of the other 31 franchises. This is such a weird and uncomfortable situation in so many ways. Best case scenario, this guy is completely innocent and some team gets to pay him well below market value for the next 2 to 3 years. It feels like exploitation of the player to force him into a draft system then not draft him. It also feels like sleezy college recruiting is infiltrating the pro game with Rex Ryan "just passing through" Baton Rouge. Nobody just passes through Baton Rouge.

Gettleman talked about smarts with Shaq too. He said every decision he makes has to benefit the team in the short run and long run. So while Shaq and Devin might not be finished products. Their intelligence and talent will allow them to contribute while they develop. Forget the 40 time with Devin. He's explosive. His vertical and broad blew Kelvin away. They are both big but that is where the comparisons stop for me.

La'El Collins may be in play after all
KendrickPanther replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yeah those are great arguments for a veteran with a family. This guys is probably 22 years old looking to max earnings and max appearance fees to recoup the money he lost in this ordeal. When Moose went to Chicago he said his appearance fees tripled. We are talking 35 grand to show up at a car dealership. San Diego might look mediocre now but his agent would love to have him in LA in a few years. As far as "winning" is concerned. 21 year olds need to earn max money before they worry about winning. By the time he gets to a second contract our roster and every other roster will have turned over and who knows what teams will be winning. I think we have a shot because we can offer him playing time. But this is not a max earnings city for him until his second contract. But all of this is moot if any doubt lingers because other franchises will take a chance before we will. The details of the case that are available to the public do not rule out his involvement and in fact make it look very possible he was involved. -

Do you really want to argue Charlotte is a more enticing market to play in than Miami, San Diego, San Francisco, New York, Houston, and New Orleans? New Orleans and Dallas would be the local teams for him. Although Dallas may not have early playing time for him. -
Can we get the OP updated and this thread or a thread stickied?

If he gets cleared we would be appealing to him for the playing time chance. On the other hand there are certainly more desirable destinations that will recruit him. -
Damiere Byrd WR, South Carolina to Panthers
KendrickPanther replied to Leeroy Jenkins PhD's topic in Carolina Panthers
To have that much athletic ability and go undrafted is a head scratcher. If we can find room for him on the roster he sounds like a speed specialist. Go deep or run the reverse. It would be like that NBA player that can catch and shoot but literally do nothing else. -
What about Shane Carden for a camp arm? Local college Team, would love to see him in camp.

Just a thought. Does Gettleman keep trading off his 7th rounders so his staff can get a jump on UDFA?

Realistic Expectations For Devin Funchess This Season

The counter arguement is the team he played on. If he was playing with Jameis Winston his numbers may have looked very different. -
Realistic Expectations For Devin Funchess This Season

Mayock said his QB was terrible and couldn't get him the ball when he was wide open. On the other hand his drop rate is 9% which is scary. -
Realistic Expectations For Devin Funchess This Season

One thing that has just crossed my mind.... Remember last year when the offensive line was in such bad shape Greg Olsen was helping David Foucalt block? In those times Kelvin was our 1st option and Cotchery/Brown/Bersin was our second... I'd feel much better with Funchess as a 2nd option in those dire circumstances. -
Realistic Expectations For Devin Funchess This Season

He had a game winning touchdown in his first game. But he only scored 2 touchdowns in games we won. He did score in the tie with the Bengals and honeslt we should have beaten the Falcons when he bullied that DB in the endzone. Interesting his touchdowns only helped us in 2 wins though. -
Realistic Expectations For Devin Funchess This Season

Gettleman used words like "upside" and "potential" with him. Mike Mayock used phrases like "better pro than college player". Based on what I'm reading he has superior movement skills to Kelvin. That's fluid running, change of direction, and leaping. He's slightly less gifted in terms of size. I don't think we can expect an insane rookie season for him simply because we gave up so much to get him. Gettleman wanted him more than a 3rd and 6th round pick based on the way the draft was going. That is really all it comes down to. -
Does this thread sound familiar? It should. We did it for Kelvin last year and it's kind of fun to look back at. I don't think he will have the same impact as Kelvin. Mainly because we won't be down by 30 chucking it in the 4th quarter. He needs to come in and earn playing time. Kelvin had to beat out the likes of Brenton Bersin and Tiquan Underwood for the starting role. Devin will need to prove he is reliable in an offense with limited opportunities. I say 600 yards and 5 Touchdowns would be a good year for this rookie. What say you, Huddle?
