Frank Reich's and Jim Caldwell's interviews from today
thefuzz replied to jayboogieman's topic in Carolina Panthers
Both of them are leaps and bounds better than any head coach we've ever had. None of the macho BS. "We're gonna play tough defense, we're gonna run it down their throats and control the lines of scrimmage." God that crap's been old around here for a LONG time. These are men who know exactly what they are doing, and what they are looking for. -
Yup. While not what I would want there, the rational is solid. He could play G for a year, and move on from Moton after this year and kick him out...again, wouldn't love it, but focusing on your offensive line isn't the dumbest move in the NFL....and is likely one of the best.

The Athletic names the top coaching hires for this cycle
thefuzz replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
The good news...he didn't even "vote". It was collaborative....thank goodness. -
Never much of a smoker, but dipping? That was it for me. Didn't need to take a break at work, could dip and read or watch TV quietly before bed, etc... GF, now wife hated it, and I needed to quit. Just stopped cold turkey about 16 years ago....VERY hard. Congrats.

Interesting twist regarding Lamar Jackson...
thefuzz replied to Proudiddy's topic in Carolina Panthers
It's not ironic, it's what actually happened. They paid him, and can't replicate the success after. They have seen this writing on the wall and want to avoid it again. Just saying, you can't poo poo the Ravens in the last 2 decades, one of the very best teams out there, and have done it with average and below average QB play. Honestly, it's the only team to be able to do that in the NFL. No reason for them to think otherwise. -

They have 2. Tied with the Steelers, KC, and Giants for 2nd place behind the Patriots during that time. Yea, "in todays NFL" if you want more than that over a 23 year period, you need an unremarkable white pocket passer and to call New England home. -

Over the last 20 years, the Ravens clock in at 5th in number of wins since 2000. Meaning, that is a VERY well run team who didn't get lucky like the Packers, Pats, Steelers, or Colts during that time and have a 15 year all time great starter. During that time, the Ravens have started the likes of Elvis Grbac, Kyle Boller, Joe Flacco, and Lamar Jackson...with some others sprinkled in. Long story short, this team thinks that it can compete with a lower tier QB than most, and pay them as such....and they've proven it. Like I've been saying, the Ravens value Lamar a lot less than he does....and that should make other teams very nervous. -
A Statistical Analysis of Signing Carr vs. Trading for L. Jackson
thefuzz replied to MHS831's topic in Carolina Panthers
Agreed. There are some things that you need professional help with...maybe not everyone...but Lamar? Yea he needs help. Not everyone needs a realtor, lawyer, accountant, or financial planner...but most do. -
My hunch, they are going to be both impatient and patient....meaning I do think that we grab a capable vet, draft a QB at 9, depending on who is there, and throw them in the blender with Corral and see if we can both win games now, and train up their idea of a "franchise QB". We certainly aren't ready to win playoff games, but I do think that we are ready for a playoff push.

Code for. "I didn't like the QB situations at any of the teams that were interviewing/considering me this hiring season, I'm gonna wait a bit longer."

A Statistical Analysis of Signing Carr vs. Trading for L. Jackson
thefuzz replied to MHS831's topic in Carolina Panthers
I'm not sure how on Earth you can compare Jimmy's numbers to Carr's and not come away with the Conclusion that Carr is the superior QB in almost every way. Jimmy has played in San Fran for a long time....well....he's been there a long time, and played some games for them. The same team that started 4 QB's last year, and made Mr. Irrelevant relevant. Systems do matter, supporting staffs to matter, coaching REALLY matters. Kyle can make you or I look like Brad Johnson, and that's about what I think Jimmy G would be...if he could stay on the field. -
Don't think Bal values Lamar as much as Lamar values Lamar. The Ravens have been a consistent winning team for 20 years, they were winning before Jackson, and if he's going to cost too much, they will move on and keep on winning. The very rare team that is good with and without great QB play.
-
My thoughts exactly. We need to get a rook/young guy, but the team needs to start winning, and fast. With this offensive staff, and if we can just get a piece or two more on offense, Carr would take us to the playoffs in year 1. We need that.
-
This seems most likely to me...wouldn't hate it.
-
Not arguing, just saying that we don't really know what Carr wants. This is a good coaching staff, a terrible division, and we are in the NFC...very few top end QB's right now. In his shoes, I'm actually looking for a short deal, I'd want to hit the market again prior to 34.
-
I don't want to gather future picks, but it's not the worst idea. Prefer to take that QB or the best player at 9...fine to move up a couple spots IMO, but not into the top 3.
-
I think that we can move a little money around and frontload a 2 year deal...not ideal, but we can do it. DJ, Shaq, Moton, etc...there is some movement that can be had. Frank may want a fast start, he may LOVE Carr, either way, with Carr here, we win the division....maybe Tepper wants butts in the seats again that aren't the wrong color? I want to snag a QB in the 1st, but I wouldn't hate bringing in a legit vet to take advantage of our crap division right now in addition. Time to strike while the iron is hot IMO.

From Athletic J Person on Caldwell connections and OC
thefuzz replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yup. My boss (if you call him that) says 1 thing to me. "Don't make your problems my problems." That's it. Meaning, I don't want to know if you are sick, don't care when you come and go, don't want to hear about your day or the tough time you are having, just get the work done. I've worked for micromanagers, I'll never do it again...this job is the opposite, but you better be good at it, and you better be able to handle that freedom...or it can get gone real quick. Maybe Tep wanted to micromanage? Maybe he really trusted Marty? Either way, I know he's over one of those, and may be over both. Trusting those in the building now? Best thing he could ever do. -
Correct. Nobody did to be honest. Man what a handful of coups.

Hmmm, very tough question, and if I have to state my feelings I'd be the same as Scot...we have a legitimate coaching staff, and I think front office...may be the first time in our history, I trust them, even if what they get fails...it's the QB position, the hardest to fill in all of sports. But to answer the question of what I want? Personally, and this greatly depends on what Carr is looking for, but I'd want us to give him a 2/3 year deal with a large amount of guaranteed money being paid in year 1 and 2...very little to none in year 3. Draft a QB at 9 who has the mindset to learn the game and sit for at least a season, then evaluate again next offseason. That, IMO, gives us the best shot at immediate wins and playoff pushes, while preparing for the next 5+ years. Not a huge fan of selling the farm to move way up for a rookie, but if the FO and coaching staff think that's the play, I'll trust them. If Carr wants something like a Watson or Wilson deal, then Sam will do as that gap QB, and hopefully the rook can be ready by 24.

Unfortunately, I may have to retire that signature for a while. It's been around as long as I have, and that's saying something.
-
Doubtful. I'm happy. Little bit of youth in there is keeping me that way. Don't want to get TOO old in the coaching rooms. This feels like a group of people who know what they are doing...first time in the teams history that I feel that way. Fitts is still the unknown, and we do need a QB in the worst kind of way...but from GM all the way down to our QB coach, I feel that this is the most qualified front office and coaching staff that's ever been here.
