He can certainly afford it. I quoted the wrong post. Interesting thought to grab a rookie, but hold out for Watson. I'd be OK with that.
-
It's actually not, because you know damned well that he wouldn't have, but for the threat of Anderson on the other side (and Samuel in the middle if you get right down to it).

I watched the games--all of them! And I am receiver guy. I have already stated that Moore is the more valuable receiver. He also likely has the highest upside. Does that mean that I believe he's worth 18+ mil per year based upon 2020 if he does something similar in 2021 and Anderson does something similar in 2021 based upon his numbers? No. Anderson would clearly provide the better value. So, that means I would look for Moore's number to come down from that top money that apparently some here believes that he is supposed to get. If Moore is supposed to be a top five or 10 receiver in the league, and all that entails as far as handling double and triple coverage with superior route running and catching the damned ball when his number is called, then I would think that all the analysts and people who crunch the numbers like PFF, Football Outsiders and Next Gen stats would give him that respect. They give him the respect of being a top 20-25 receiver in the league, and from what I've seen, they're probably about right! They don't base things simply on yardage, nor should they. You have to look at yardage within context! Now does that mean he won't get paid 18 mil+ per year? No. The market may demand it based upon circumstances. Do I think we should think about paying him that? Sure. Do I think that we should pay him that based upon his play and progress here based upon his first few years? No! He's going to have to manifest his progress and earn that type of money in 2021!
-
Not based upon what he has done so far. He better step it up in 2021!
-
D.J. Moore is the WR1 for the Panthers, getting a lot of production in pure garbage time! No one is mistaking him for the few true ones that you have in the league, save for some Huddlers. I have watched Moore for years, and he has been fairly consistent with his production and route running which means that we may be seeing his ceiling (very good in spurts, but not great)! Do you think it's coincidence that he and Robbie (and Samuel) had arguably their best years while playing together? It wasn't! He and Anderson are the types of guys that excel when playing amid talent, and are not necessarily like OBJ, Allen Robinson, Julio, or even a Keenan Allen who will get theirs regardless. On an off note, Teddy did not play to Anderson's strength. As a matter of fact he was a hindrance to it!
-
Anderson had 18 more targets than Moore, a little more than one per game. I'd argue that Samuel was his favorite target based upon his targets vs snap count, but of course Samuel was the slot man. Where Anderson eclipsed Samuel by a marked margin is in catch percentage roughly around 15 percent more completions on a relative basis.
-
What are you saying?
-
Simply saying that doesn't mean a thing.
-
Yes he has, but he's played in a markedly better situation as well, and he's always been the expected WR1 and got those opportunities. Anderson came into the league as an undrafted free agent!

Boston Globe says Watson should remain with Texans.
top dawg replied to SizzleBuzz's topic in Carolina Panthers
And honestly, they didn't present anything new in this article. We've all heard the same arguments here, but for the new situation and circumstances surrounding it, weeks ago! And at least in my mind, this new situation doesn't make him any more likely to want to be a Texan. The new reasoning--if you can call it that--is poppycock! -
You said that Moore is our best receiver and it's not close. I said it is close. The numbers in fact do prove that out, but you are correct, they don't tell the whole story (but, remember, that goes both ways). 28, which he is not yet, is not pushing 30. Anderson still has multiple prime years left depending upon how well he takes care of his business! Look, dude, I'm not disagreeing that it may be an oversight to devalue or belittle Moore. He is likely our most valuable receiver simply due to him being so young and hopefully yet to hit his stride, but he's going to have to up his game if he expects to get paid like a top five receiver in the game. He simply hasn't showed that skill level in regards to route running, or flat out doggedness! We're not talking Tyreek Hill, Michael Thomas or Allen Robinson here. He's going to have to play to that level before I'd open up the bank vault and deal him that type of money. Truth be told, in today's dollars He should probably get like 13-16 mil max. With everything that he's done (or not)--and you can whine about the QB play to a point--Moore hasn't played beyond the level where he isn't supposed to be a value-type signing as compared to a top dollar signing (Anderson hasn't either). If he expects that, then he better prove it this year (and I don't care what the Giants handed Golladay), otherwise he's still in the same tier, though a little higher on the wage scale, as Robby.
-
It actually is close. Look at the numbers! It's not like Robby has been playing with Kurt Warner. Moreover, Anderson is going to get a raise as well! 10-11 mil is selling him short.

Two things: Drew Brees was markedly better than Darnold ever was before being released to free agency, so the Saints didn't have to use any draft capital. Desean Watson's situation will have to really eclipse the ordinary for him to be considered before the draft, as far as time and circumstances. I would think that the ONLY chance he has to even get off, much less before the draft (even perceptibly) is for his defense to prove that even one person is lying. If that were to happen, though somewhat of a longshot, then that may impugn the whole lot of them.
-
From what I gather, he is a solid move TE with a big frame, decent speed, and a nice catch radius. IDK that we should expect a lot of YAC, but if he can improve it would certainly be a bonus. He will move the chains if given the opportunity (14.1 YPC in 2020). Pretty good value signing.

According to revengeofthebirds.com, when throwing to Arnold, the passer rating for the QB was 128.9. His nickname is Big Dan BTW!
-
Exactly what I was thinking!
-
I can't be the only one that initially saw "Sam Darnold" when I got a notification.
-
I'll just say that I believe circumstances are about to change.
-
No he hasn't! This stuff has mushroomed like nobody's business within the span of essentially three days. Nobody saw this coming except for the ambulance chaser. Even Watson was blindsided from some perspective! Schefter is likely now a bystander rubber-necking just like the rest of us at this point. The only person's credibility at stake at this point is Buzbee's, Watson's, maybe his enablers' (if he had any) and the supposed victims! And Watson obviously has more to lose than just his credibility!

ESPN's David Newton talks defensive flexibility
top dawg replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
At this point, even I would lean toward accepting that that ship has sailed. If and/or when Watson becomes available, I think that his market will have taken a major hit, so all the talk of two defensive players, this that and the other looks like a wrap! -
Just when I thought about making a general thread about how sneaky good our defense could be, David Newton pens a decent article on how our new additions may benefit the Panthers' unit and give Phil Snow even more flexibility that he obviously covets! Newton touched on what Rhule has spoken about more need for--not speed, which I'd argue was an obvious focus as well considering our acquisitions, but pressure. "Pressure as in reaching a one-year, $8 million deal with former Arizona edge rusher Haason Reddick, who had 12.5 sacks last season, and reaching a two-year, $8.1 million deal with former Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman Morgan Fox, who had six sacks last season." And, to be totally honest, I didn't realize Fox had that type of ability, which one could argue may have only been a product of playing among some great NFL talent, but I feel that he may surprise. It's not like Spiderman, YGM, Brown, Roy, Shaq, Perryman, Chinn and others are chopped liver. I expect he will surprise. He may even be at least as good as Obada (whom I'm still hoping will return). Plus, he's younger than Obada. And, he also has that versatility of being able to play from DE or DT (as Newton noted). "Adding Reddick, Fox and free-agent pickup Denzel Perryman at middle linebacker to a lineup that already includes 2020 sack leader Brian Burns, 2020 NFL rookie of the year candidate Jeremy Chinn, 2020 first-round pick Derrick Brown and 2020 second-round pick Yetur Gross-Matos should give Snow the talent and position flexibility to throw almost any scheme he wants at opponents." "Flexibility" can't be understated! And some may disagree--hell, I did before I really thought about it--but Snow did a helluva job with such youngins sprinkled with glorified JAGs on defense, so I can't wait to see what the burgeoning mad scientist comes up with once he "gets into his new bag"! You better believe that Reddick will play a major part. Not only does it make sense simply because we acquired him and paid him relatively well for a year, but because he let it be known, as stated in a PFT article by Josh Alper, exactly what he was looking for before signing with someone. “I want my number to be called,” Reddick said. “I want to be one of the guys that’s called on to make plays. I want the fit and the feeling to be right. I want a mutual understanding between me and the coaching staff about what’s expected, what’s to be done, and the effort I’m going to give." And, who better to call his number than the guys that believe in him and understand what he can do and is about? “I love Haason,” Rhule told an Arizona radio station in 2017 after Reddick was selected by the Cardinals with the 13th pick. “He’s everything that’s right with college football. He’s tough, he’s hard-nosed. ... He’s relentless. “In a day and age where guys on defense don’t run to the football anymore because of all the tempo, and guys don’t play hard all the time, Haason set the standard for our defense.’’ So strap up boys and girls, I'm predicting a fun ride, and that's before we've even seen the last move in free agency! I suspect we'll find a good pairing with Action Jackson... https://www.espn.com/blog/carolina-panthers/post/_/id/34837/panthers-building-defense-behind-versatile-pass-rushers-in-free-agency?device=featurephone

Not quite understanding your last statement here. We should get "that" QB and draft a QB? What QB? As for the one-year prove-it deal, I am a fan in certain situations. It depends on your circumstances (which obviously won't be the best). I was telling Snow in the thread that if we had stuck to a one-year prove-it deal as opposed to what was essentially a two-year prove it deal with Teddy, we wouldn't be in this situation (and that not necessarily only means this specific possible lame duck situation with Teddy where we really don't want him, but maybe the greater situation with drafting outside of the top 5, because Teddy would likely have been a Bear).
-
I wouldn't say it's crazy, we just couldn't afford him. Samuel played more because he's a more versatile and dynamic player! Good receivers will find their way on to the field (under most coaches).
