Sean Ryan on key Darnold improvement (P-Wire's Rizzuti) & my $0.02

I agree about the coach; I just don't believe what Smitty said has any relevance to this thread. -

On an off note, Darin Gantt attributed the exact first quote to Ryan referencing P.J. Walker in another article. "I think his footwork, his footwork in the pocket, there's less movement," Ryan said. "I don't think he moves as much when he doesn't have to. Again, for me, that's a big deal. I was about to blame Antony Rizutti for some bummy, piecemeal journalism, but it was actually Gantt that made the error, as the question was in reference to Sam Darnold (at the very beginning of the vid). Gantt works for the Panthers, but he attributed an answer about Darnold to Walker, so the bummy, piecemeal work was by the Panthers' finest. Anthony Rizzuti for USA Today FTW! Tagging you, @Mr. Scot, because you may be mildly interested -

Honestly, the Smitty thing must have not made an impression because I don't remember it. Now admittedly I could have been distracted. I just don't see why what he said has any relevance whatsoever to what Ryan said. It certainly wasn't on my mindset when creating the thread. -

Deshaun Watson trade now as unlikely as ever...

Not really. What are they going to do, cut him? And why would they? That ship has sailed! Accept it! -

I mean, that's one way to see it, but even Ryan alluded to the fact that Sam apparently moved way too much in the pocket before Ryan coached him up. Ryan didn't use the term "happy feet", but that's just semantics. I really don't see how you can spin frenetic feet due to panicking from real or perceived pressure in the pocket as a good thing. "Athletic" footwork is positive when the QB is purposefully moving them in order to avoid pointed pressure in the pocket, so hopefully that's what Sam will excel at as a Panther. But, it all remains to be seen. -

I was under the impression that he doesn't want to play for them anymore. He'll sit, be quiet, and make his money. -

Interesting order of words...A circuitous way to say "just a guy" -
Apparently QB Coach Sean Ryan talked to the media yesterday, and Anthony Rizzuti of Panthers Wire highlighted a key point. “I think his footwork. I think his footwork in the pocket,” Ryan said when asked of a particular improvement in the starter’s game since he arrived. “I think there’s less movement. I don’t think he moves as much when he doesn’t have to. For me, that’s a big deal.” That quite possibly could be a big deal, but I'm not buying it until I see Darnold display it on a consistent basis, without a red jersey, against first team defenses where big men are trying to implant him in the FieldTurf. As Rizzuti pointed out, Darnold did show some pocket mastery once he settled down last Friday as he navigated Pittsburgh's second stringers, and maybe I am a bit jaded due to seeing relatively recent Panthers QBs get rolled up and injured on our beloved but dearly departed natural grass, but it was what happened before Darnold "reeled in his footwork" that haunts me. The "happy feet" and really ill-advised throw brought a rush of bad memories, the premature sum of all fears, predetermined and jaded expectations, and a "see, I told you so" out-of-tune chorus of Huddle voices (including maybe even my own) in my head. The only comfort that I had was wrapping myself up in the security blanket of, "It's the preseason." So, excuse me if I have to see more. I've been in a low-key personal struggle to tamp those voices and the negativity down. But Rhule is not a fool, and Sean Ryan is a good QB coach, as displayed by the logic of why "happy feet" don't necessarily make for happy results. “Footwork relates to it in a progression-style passing game. When your feet are on time and you’re in rhythm, you can make quick decisions and you’re comfortable with doing it. Versus ‘Hey, my feet are moving. I’m not ready to throw when I should be ready to throw. Now, my timing is off and I’m doing things with the football that I shouldn’t be doing in normal progressions.'” His portrayal of the potential domino effect is simple, yet literal coach-speak. He knows what Darnold's problems are. Hell, we all know. The Jets certainly did a number on Sam. We'll see if Ryan has really helped him to develop--fixed some of those issues. And, maybe equally as important in regards to Darnold, we'll see if we've fixed some of the issues to put Darnold in a better situation to succeed once the regular season begins...because preseason never tells the whole story. https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/2021/09/03/panthers-qbs-coach-sean-ryan-sam-darnold/

Well, it's kind of like an RB that fumbles: if a QB consistently, or even continually, turns the ball over, then he won't be playing...unless maybe he's P.J. Walker. -

It's not like he's really tore it up with his 4 yard average. If he's not good in pass pro or ST, Rhule will skip him. -

Moore was never all that in the first place, that's why the Hawks let him walk. In my mind, he was CYA insurance all along. His dead cap is just the cost of doing business. -
Did you expect them to? Remember when all these people were talking up David Moore like he was a solid 3 (that could maybe even push to a 2 said one guy)? You didn't hear a peep from me because I knew he was JAG. As for the O-line additions, everybody knew we were getting average guys at the very best. My expectation was maybe the highest class of mediocrity. As for the money, I guess it's the cost of doing business--CYA money, akin to insurance. So, I'm not gonna get upset about a little dead cap.

The dropped balls were by and large the ones that Grier threw. You can't drop a ball from PJ unless you have a 5 Yard catch radius. -

I'm not too sure, with this FO. Some of the things they do and don't do are perplexing. -
Well, no Jake Fromm, unless we raid the Bills' PS.

Wait a minute! I thought these wouldn't go through until 4PM. Maybe they're doing it after 24Hrs of the person being cut. -
Just heard a quick word from Joe Horn on Jaycee on ESPN
top dawg posted a topic in Carolina Panthers
Joe Horn basically emphasized that his son knows that the NFL is a job, and that's how Jaycee approaches the game, unlike some other rookies that might think it's all fun and games. He emphasized that his son is a professional already. Apparently they have had a blueprint for Jaycee to follow, and so far so good! I don't know if Ed McCaffrey imparted this all-business attitude upon Christian, but I kinda can see some similarities in their attitudes regarding their respective jobs. Here's to hoping that Jaycee's needle points as high as CMC's does at their respective positions. Jaycee's demeanor which kind of gives you a sense that he is serious about his business and mature about his approach to the game is not an act. He gets it honest. That's my general impression from hearing a few words from his father. Take it FWIW. Just thought that I'd share.- 3 replies

Waiver wire and free agent folly. Who we getting?
top dawg replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
Should be some time after 4PM today after waiver claims are processed. -
Point taken, but Benjamin isn't necessarily the best example, as there were plenty of questions regarding his pro viability due to his attitude--his maturity and work ethic. So flaming out is always a risk for boom-or-bust type players.

How about we compare drafts?

I'm going on the last part of my shift. By 6:30PM I hope to get some positive news about a QB AND a kicker.
