Question for you 50 years plus folk (and others)?
top dawg replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
I remember when I was still trying to hold on to the team of my youth, the Steelers. Even though I proudly wore the gear the day they won the championship (Cowher's team) when I was an adult, I had effectively became a Panthers fan in my heart, so that Steelers victory though sweet, was kind of hollow. As such, the life I've lived won't be complete without the Panthers winning it all at least once. -
Deshaun Watson trade now as unlikely as ever...

Tomāto or tom-ah-to. Perspective can be a funny thing. -
Going back and forth with @Mr. Scot, has made me think of a question. If Tepper was to become a meddlesome owner in the mold of a Jerry Jones, but win a championship within say the next five years, and that would be the only ring that the Panthers would get for the next two or three decades, would you take that? Keep in mind, you're assured one championship within the next 5 years. IIt's just a hypothetical. Personally, I don't think Tepper will ever become that guy. I do think he may swing that hammer from time (which makes me think of the Japanese proverb: The nail that sticks out gets the hammer). I say that only to say that Tepper and Fit better normalize the Panthers among the top tier teams in the league within the next few years.

Again, Scot, that's not really what's going on here. But, yes Darnold is today's project, but his status is about as settled as his "happy feet" under pressure. He may become settled--the answer to all our problems--but that remains to be seen. And as things aren't settled, we're still interested in Watson (whether you want to admit it or not). Darnold's play, or Watson's legal status, can erase that interest for sure. Even a Rattler, Ridder, or a Howell can erase that interest for sure (business doesn't wait on Watson), if it comes to that, but let's not pretend that there's no interest. -
That might be true, but a wise person considers context. A first offseason and draft is a first offseason and draft where the Panthers were in the middle of a transition (during a pandemic, no less). Any reasonable person will give Rhule a little benefit of doubt and grace if things didn't go too well, which some did and some didn't. This offseason was his second opportunity, and at least on paper I'd say that it's a marked improvement upon the first. Hopefully the season follows suit, not that the first one was a complete disaster. All that said, it's still ONLY his second one, so a wise man considers that there will still be mistakes, though hopefully less mistakes (but honestly there is never perfection), while realizing that patience is necessary for essentially what is and was a massive rebuild under foot.

That's not what's happening in the case of Desean Watson. We all know it. It's also why I said there are other considerations. -

No one has to be a talent evaluator to know that Deshaun Watson is a franchise QB, not even David Tepper. That part has already been established. Once a player has already established his status as a top dawg, then the emphasis comes down to other things, just saying. This isn't a case of talent evaluation. I don't think it's a stretch for an owner to strongly suggest, if not outright twist the arm of his underlings, that he'd like a certain established veteran (particularly in free agency, which is not the case for Watson of course), particularly at QB, especially if that QB is young, talented and pretty much proven, if it works from a business perspective. That being said, I don't think that makes said owners necessarily go to the extent of Jerry Jones, Dan Snyder or Jeff Lurie, or even fundamentally believe in or desire to manifest that trio's modus operandi (even though two have championships). -

I'm sure he'll let Rhule and Fit run the team as they see fit (no pun intended), and give them wide latitude to do whatever, possibly for a longer duration than anyone would ever believe today, but every owner has his limit. It's all good, until it's not. One thing that we do know, regardless if you want to admit it, is that we absolutely do have some interest and are monitoring the situation of Mr. Whip It Out (as I believe Sizzlebuzz referred to him). Another thing that we do know is that Tepper absolutely believes in an elite QB. Another thing that we do know is that Teddy was jettisoned with the quickness. Another thing that we do know is that Darnold is just one big question that we won't even begin to get answers to beginning next week (I love that..."next week"). Now I am not saying that Tepper will meddle, especially in the classic or even football sense of the word, but we also know that he's a man that will swing the hammer--err bat, when he wants. Rhule swung the bat on Teddy, and he's taking another swing on Darnold. He may even get a third opportunity to simply strike out, but I can't say with 100 percent certainty that Tepper is just going to stand idly by and let him do it. He might. But the next time Rhule comes up to bat, don't be surprised if there's a designated hitter. -
Not really. What Marty did was throwing poo against the wall and seeing if it sticks. As a matter of fact, Panthers fans complained for many years that we weren't making any moves at all in free agency. Marty's issues were more on the business side--contract-value analysis, and balancing all the pieces. Plus, I dare say, that even after only two drafts, Rhule (or Rhule-Fit) is better at personnel evaluation.

Sean Ryan on key Darnold improvement (P-Wire's Rizzuti) & my $0.02
top dawg replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
Well, even Ryan alluded to the fact that Sam has improved his so-called "happy feet", even if he didn't expressly use the term. That's why I don't know why you and @bigdavis seem to want to make such a clean delineation of what the two are saying. It was pretty obvious from the preseason game that Sam did display a little frenetic feet in the pocket--I mean, he wasn't perfect--but he settled down, as alluded to by Anthony Rizzuti, and a number of Huddlers--so I really don't see what the point of contention is here, unless you believe that Darnold didn't, and that's your choice (though I disagree). Furthermore, Smitty didn't really disagree with Ryan, which points even more to the fact that the premise that people are saying things because of what Smitty said really has little merit. -
Yeah, I can get with that, but what is "going all-in"? I mean, I don't even feel we have the resources to go all-in. That being said, I think there is something to the notion of starting, or not starting as it were, Christensen and Brown...

Not that I ever wanted to give Steve Smith's opinion any relevance in this thread, but Big Davis vs Smitty on a QB having happy feet, who you gonna believe? -

Good point! On an off note, I think I'll unblock you now. Not that you care, or that I'm all that, but don't confuse/accuse me for/or of being a troll again, or I'll block you again. I'll admit when I'm trolling, but it's not my shtick. If I disagree, I'll make a rational argument to back it up. Sometimes it's not popular, I'll admit, and sometimes Huddlers hate it (yes they do), but I don't just sling poo just to be slinging it. At the end of the day, you threatened to block me, and though I think you make valid arguments sometimes--and I enjoy the dialogue--you have to realize that I have a block button too, and I actually get a kick out if using it against pure pricks (which I don't suspect that you are, but I don't know). Alrighty then. Carry on! -

That's a little harsh, if not untrue. And I was always skeptical of Cam--still am--as a supposedly elite QB and criticized him for not making the leap (but I think he worked at it). -
Sometimes Rhule has to be smashed in the face, multiple times, by bad play before he gets the message.

As @LinvilleGorge so painfully pointed out to me in another thread, Winston and Darnold have been the same type of QB on many levels. So, if you think Winston is going to flame out quickly, do you think Darnold is going to flame out just as quickly? And if not, why not? There are arguments to be made as to why both could flame out (or not), and there are arguments to be made that either franchise could eventually be in play for Watson. Of course with all the reports, and an owner that's apparently hellbent on getting a franchise QB (and would be even more so if Rhule's second project fails), I'd argue that we'd be one of the top players, if not the top player in a Watson sweepstakes. -
Panthers waiver claims and practice squad signings

Believe me; no GM in his right mind would trade for Trenton Cannon. Rhule is just full o' sh¡t sometimes...for his own purposes of course. He has his reasoning. He says a lot--maybe even a "lie" here or there--but he likes to hold things close to the vest. You definitely have to take what he says with a grain of salt. -

Yeah he pulled it from the Ryan's presser. Still a lack of professionalism. At least know who the person is referring to before you write something on it. Being that they both work for the Panthers, it's almost unbelievable. -

I used to scoff at such remarks, but when Rhule says that a man is the best gunner in the league and then cuts him, it makes it hard to believe that praise means a whole lot for bubble and marginal players. I'm not saying that he's wrong to cut them, that's his prerogative, but there's no need to sell fans a bunch of bullsh¡t. -

You're not going to win by alienating fans, but more importantly bu allowing a disgruntled QB to lead the team. -

It doesn't make sense to make him play. Just accept it. Plus, there would likely be a huge backlash by the public if they did. -
