  1. Maybe they had a WR revolt and want some deep targets. Which Frank wont call with his baby in the game yet. Because he doesn’t think the OL will protect him on longer developing routes? Okay I know that is a stretch but I am suspicious of the reasons we shorten/compress the field in the passing game. Dalton, come one down.
  2. Most of that is me. I feel that. I dont get why people are calling criticism “vitriol” at Bryce Young. If I have any of that is if for the idiots that crowned him before the takes an NFL snap and they did it starting well before the draft. And they gloat that him being picked is affirmation of their football intelligence and just crow more. Any criticism of the pick, the player, they go straight for the fan card. Unless you praise it all, you are not a fan. Or you are stupid because you don’t follow the ‘smart’ crowd (don’t share their opinion). And I oretty much think they are stupid, for being so homery and close minded they won’t even legitimately consider the objections to the player (again, not the person). This is the type of stuff you get if you speak on it: No your eyes didn’t see a lack of velocity, everybody says his arm is plenty good for the NFL. That’s what the attitude is towards a question if his arm strength. Same with the athleticism questions. SEC is as good as the NFL that is proof enough. He did it there against NFL players! (prevailing attitude of Young supporters in an argument, who never seem to consider there are far more non NFL players on the field in probably every one of those games). I have not called him a bust, I am not sure he will be one. I think if he can learn how to time his throws and can survive the abuse he can be an average starter, maybe, which isn’t chopped liver. The thing that was so crazy or objectionable to me is the value they assigned to him, because I adamantly believe he is not the type of player that you give that up for. He will have to prove that before I accept it, so Super Bowl, consistent playoffs, deep into them, etc). I think he was a late 1st gamble at best. He could succeed generally IOW have a career but I just cant see a career profile commensurate with the currency used on him.
  3. To the above post, people hear that preseason the offense looks horrible because they are afraid of showing anything. Season comes, what were they afraid of? Nothing to see. Nothing at all to see really. Hey nj up there, Fox mailed 2010 in, in a hissy fit tantrum type of reaction to not getting an extension and realizing he was on the way out. Had he had integrity and quit, he keeps respect. He stayed and treaded water and dgaf basically.
  4. Yeah I was gonna say on Campen, I haven't researched his employment history but situations where having to change jobs is the outcome are not always the same. It is not always because the employee isn't doing a good job though sure, that could have been in the mix too. He got hired again every time, in the NFL so he must be doing okay at least. The players like him, the OL last year came together nicely. And fwiw I am not one rating them top five or anything like a lot of people were, but there was steady progress. As I believe there will be this season. Specific to here and now I can’t see where he is a source of any dysfunction or issues, and there are injuries here early hampering the development of cohesion and some young players. Bigger fish to fry in the repair of this team afaic. I don’t know enough about him to make a claim on anything but I looked at the hiring of Brown with some questioning type of reactions, like it was weird that a Running Back is brought in to develop a QB offense. Like, what has he done? I couldn’t immediately see why he was a ‘great get’. Not that he isn’t but I am not sure he called plays in LA and he was a RB and where/how does that fit in here with all the other hires which are QB passing game focused. I guess I just didn’t immediately understand him in that role. Still feel unclear. Which. makes me curious as to why people are clamoring for him to call the plays. Someone want to correct the info here and say what play calling experience and QB expertise he possesses?
  5. Pie for the incisive boil it down to the bottom line. You don’t fix the team without fixing that first. Tepper has to have his security clearance pulled and we will get him on the “need to know” list. edit: I think Fitterer is okay enough if the football people are in charge. There is no way to assess his responsibility level for the problems that were created through personnel and contract missteps. The execution of a course of action? Yep he owns that but if the course wasn’t his doing, I don’t think I punish him for another’s bad thinking.
  6. 1 for 3. Wilks was a keeper. Supposed to be a little humorous but probably pisses someone off. Heh hope not.
  7. I respect and appreciate Shaq Thompson. He has been a great Panther that had to live in the shadow of some pretty tough acts. Is judged alongside TD and Luke, where at the same time nearly every guy that comes through for the next 20 years will have a tough job measuring up to them.
  8. Crap. Won't allow an edit, but I guess I read 1.4 as 1.8. Not with my glasses on! Time for new ones. Sorry. That is nothing.
  9. Campen does, and we are in year two there.
  10. Haven't looked. Will. But watching the replay earlier, and just estimating with a count, there were multiple times when it wasn't 1.8 secs. I would say over three on one sack. But hmmm. now that I look back on it, DL were probably breathing pretty hard after 1.8 seconds, so maybe? yeah now that I take that into consideration, it definitely seems possible.... and no doubt there were jailbreaks too where it wasn't even 1.8 secs. Not related to the link but I feel like the reason there is no deep passing game has a hefty element of planner/playcaller distrust in the OL to block it, mixed in there. Justified or not. This is an 'err on the side of safe', 'color inside the lines' bunch of walking bosses Tepper has hired.
  11. It doesn't get done if your owner vetoes it, just for one possibility. In on every deal, except that one? Hmmm. I really do think that, considering Tepper and Rhule both being higher than Fitterer in the pecking order, if I were tasked with judging him, I mean, I think it would be very difficult to feel confident about my evaluation. Without the actual play by play, how can you know what to think? I don't have any idea how much real power he has.
  12. I definitely agree with every word quoted. There seems to be zero pressure put on Reich to win this year, he looks as if he just wants a sandwich a beer and a nap and then get back to game planning 2024' I don't think Young will be the worst QB in the league, but that isn't the bar and I don't know that he will be fine when that definition is tighter than 'okay' or 'average starter'. I can see him being wily after some seasons, but at the root of it is a different reality to contend with... that I just don't enjoy watching the style of football I expect them to play with him. Dumpoff. Leave the pocket, throw away OB. 3rd and 7: hit the safety valve, and if he can't make a play to get a first, you punt. All from the gun. That's about it.
  13. John Fox lost my respect in the 2010 season. Screw him.
  14. We know what stage he is in. Me too. Have been since before the draft when it became clear he was going to be the pick. Based off of what I saw watching his college and pro day video, I felt very depressed. Been hoping against reason for better outcome but this current state of things, or at least my perception of it, is not encouraging at all.
  15. Worth it for tne last sentence. I dont know what happened inside the team but I like to think Cam and Smitty would have worked that stuff out. I believe Gettleman used that angle to justify an unpopular financially motivated move. The cap was fuged and Smitty wouldn’t take a pay cut is more what the real reason probably was. And since JR loved Smitty, he would have paid him I believe. G man had to get JR onboard somehow. I can’t sign no affidavit about it though, NDA.
  16. I don’t know about the play calling to argue with people, but I do know bad execution ven I see it. The “bad play calls” may be bad play designs, or they may be bad execution. When 2 guys are within 10-15 feet of each other when the ball arrives in their vicinity, I dont think they are running the play as designed.
  17. Interesting. Great idea for an offseason thread. See you then I hope. back to doom and gloom. It is timely.
  18. That is what they are treating it like. And if you think about it, until a couple years ago we played our fourth preseason game opening week. And the first week of the season was this past weekend, and those game have traditionally been bad indicators of season success. I always threw the first game out in the days of 4 preseason games because non predictable poo always happened, without fail. Not with every team but to enough that you just cant trust the results. So you are kind of right, in tne joke you are making without really intending to be. The first real game, traditionally, that you can start to get a handle on teams, is coming up in week three. That is when poo really starts. If they suck hard after three weeks, start making holiday vacation plans.
  19. I dont think the staff believes they can keep Young upright long enough to call deep balls.
  20. The owner hires who he thinks ‘get it’, naturally, and they show him that they do get it by agreeing with him. He is the one who doesn’t get it. Yet. So far. Willy Ever. When he is paying you all that dough and giving you the dream job, you feel an obligation to go along with what he wants. And justify it by affirming the name signed on your paycheck. It is your job to satisfy that individual. Our hires, succumbed to this I think. They rationalized this trade up to themselves until they agreed with it. i believe. Because, I seriously cannot believe these football lifers wanted to go with this kid at that price. I cannot figure what they were thinking other than yes by that point.
  21. When you cant reach the doorknob, hard to tell if you have tne right key. I dont know if he can see the numbers on the linemen’s jerseys from down there.
  22. There is no urgency to win. You can see that right? They have punted the season already and were cluing people in with the don’t expect playoffs and the 3 preseason games ‘first look at your 2023 Carolina Panthers’ (especially the fourth one where the offense was ‘unveiled’). So anyhow, no pressure on the staff do anything but cash checks while they build their utopia dynastic organization of a million expert coaches, continue teaching a player to become a winner (ostensibly anyway) for a billionaire owner who won’t bitch for a long time because they took his preferred quarterback and installed his defense (a veteran move by Reich, gotta hand it to him). What can he bitch about? He wanted it. Asked for each bit. Okay… As far as play calling, has TM our OC ever called plays in the NFL? Regardless, maybe Reich needs to stop trying to keep people happy with this consensus play calling stuff and just tell them what freaking play we are gonna run. Bet you a dollar they would get them in faster. And too many cooks you end up with something like Polynesian Irish Mexican boiled pepperoni goulash anyway. Yum. Bryce Young. It is too fast for him now. He doesn’t have elite anything really, except allegedly his processing. Which needs to seriously recalibrate to get up to NFL game speed. I mean, he has to step up his entire process because he does not have the arm to fit the ball into tight places in situations *where velocity is demanded* and the players are faster than what he is used to. They close on the ball faster. They close on him faster. He isn’t synching it all up to this point. His old used to be good enough, was good enough to beat most very good to excellent college teams starting level players. That same good enough isn’t good enough at the NFL level. It is that simple, despite the yearly pronouncements that the SEC is basically the same level as NFL. Whether or how well he adjusts to it will determine everything in my opinion. I was down as having a very negative outlook on the ‘cost vs probability of success’ guesswork err analysis, fwiw. Still TBD. And he can still be pretty good without being worth the cost. Cant wait.
  23. Not real excited. I expect the other team to win, which kind of keeps the excitement hormones under control.
