I want him to succeed but he's going to really have to show he can survive the NFL. I said before the draft last year that I would back whoever we chose. Young is it and for our sake I hope the hell he shows he really is worthy of the #1 pick. His weight and his height are factors, not to mention he doesn't really have a great deep ball. I am pulling for him, but I am also ready to face that fact that he just doesn't have the build for a Franchise NFL QB.
-
The fact is Young's weight is a major problem. He can say whatever he wants to say his weight is but, the truth shows on the field. At less than 200 lbs when a 330+ pound defensive lineman grabs you. You're not getting away. It was very clear that if someone got to him the chances of him breaking the tackle were slim. They ranted and raved about his pocket awareness and how well he could maneuver the pocket. That is as long as no one gets his hands on him. 9 times out of 10 he's not going to break the tackle. We got spoiled by Cam who regularly broke tackles and made big plays. Young isn't going to do that. This is why we have to have a stellar offensive line. Until we have one. Teams are going to come after him and bet they reach him before he can get a pass off. They don't have to worry about him breaking tackles and making big plays.

Young had an uphill battle to begin with. We surrounded him with players like Inch Sanders and stone hands TMJ. Not to mention a horrific offensive line scheme. Fitterer did absolutely nothing to help him succeed. I said last year that if we were going to draft Young, we were going to HAVE to have top tier offensive line. Beasts at every position and our backup would have to be up and coming beasts. If we don't build our line to a top 10 line. Young was a wasted pick.

Getting Crunch Time for the Panthers and Brian Burns
DaveThePanther2008 replied to 45catfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Many teams think Burns is legit Edge Rusher. We need to take advantage of this. Sign him and trade him. He's not going to make a difference in whether we win more games than we lose. We are in total rebuild mode and need to get assets for 2025. It's one of the reason's I would trade #33 for a 1st next year. I don't think we'll trade Burns before the draft. If we do, great. I just feel teams are going to want to keep 24's draft pick. We take a 2025 and a 2026 first rounder for him. If we trade #33 and get a 1st in 2025 for Burns and maybe a 3rd this year. Then we have our 1st in 2025. We have 3 firsts to use as bargaining chips for a QB should Bryce fail in 2024. If Bryce turns out to be the man, we are in great shape to add players that can be core players for many years. -
@Verge I like the mock draft. It addresses our biggest issues. Beebe and Bortolini makes a ton of sense. While I do not believe our line is as bad as 2023 would suggest, I do believe finding monsters we give us depth that we have sorely missed over the 4 or 5 season. More importantly we need to groom a new starting center and I like the Bortolini assessment in the write up. 5'8" scares me but the solid route running makes me happy. Sounds like a good #2. If we can get a #1 in free agency than our offense might actually score some points this year. Overall, with the choices you made with the limited number of draft picks. It's a good mock draft. Obviously, things will change once the new season starts in 3 weeks.

I get so tired of every game that is played the announcer have to say, "Analytics Says, go for it" However, you can't always take what one team is good at and another isn't. Forth and 2 against the Panthers, sure go for it. Against a top DL. Statically it's probably not a good idea. Dan Campbell proved Analytics WRONG. It's a game and different teams offer different outcomes. It's not something that should be uniformly based off of where you are on the field. Football sense should dictate a decision not Analytics. This goes for player evaluation too. You can't measure desire. You can't measure nastiness. The last time, I can remember, we had any prospect form the lower rounds or free agency that actually panned out was Andrew Norwell. I hope and pray that Dan Morgan and his staff really dig deep and find some of those players.

Draft Tez Walker!!
DaveThePanther2008 replied to Teddy2SuperBowlHeartBreaks's topic in Carolina Panthers
I like Dez and he got a raw deal with being held out for so long at UNC but, route running has to be a top priority for any WR we draft. If he's there later in the draft than we should take a shot but no with our 2nd or 3rd. -
Yeah, I think this guy is going to be a STUD. Had he had a full season with UNC his stock would have been much higher.

Let's not go too crazy with OL upgrades
DaveThePanther2008 replied to MHS831's topic in Carolina Panthers
It's a double edge sword. We need receivers to be able to get open and catch the ball, but we have to have an O-line good enough to protect our midget QB. So, which do you address first? Barring a trade I say WR. I say this because our WR Corp outside of Theilen was terrible. Terrible routes and no hands. This is a fact. We all saw it. However, our O-line was torn apart partially by injury and an insane scheme. As you said getting Corbett and BC back will help. Zavala should have never seen the field his rookie season. Too much to learn. I still think there is hope for him. Overall, I think the O-Line is fixable with what we have over a WR Corp that is horrendous. Canales and Morgan have their work cut out for them. They will have to decide if the O-line is priority or receiver. I wouldn't reach for any position. We should either trade out of the pick or select BPA. Whatever position we grab at #33 will most likely be an upgrade at that position. -
If the WR class is as good as many say. Take the 1st next year and a 3rd this year. IMO we need to get more top tier talent and 2025 gives us a chance to move around with 2 or more 1st round picks.
-
I think we should build for 2025. Sign and Trade Burns for 2 #1. If Horn actually plays well and doesn't get hurt. Trade him at the deadline for at least one 1st rounder. Trade down #33 for a 2025 first rounder and maybe a 3rd. Draft well with our remaining picks and go from there. We could possibly have 4 first rounders to use to get studs at each position. Also have the possibility to trade up for a QB if Young fails in his sophomore campaign.
-
So you're saying BPA. Pretty much covers it all.
-
Not just a former player but a great one. He knows what it takes and as you said. He'll be able to sort out BS from fact.
-
I'd like to be a fly on the wall in some of his interviews. I think Morgan will do well to bring that dawg out in his interviews.
-
The issue I have with our pick at 33 is there is going to be a projected first round pick that fall out of the first round. The question will be WHY? While I agree we need to get O-line help I am not sold that what we have on the roster is trash. I continue to believe it had to do with the scheme that Reich wanted and what we were built for. Hopefully our new head coach goes back to a more traditional style of blocking that our players are better at. We have been jinxed for nearly 20 years on 2nd round WRs. After Moose I don't think we have ever hit on a 2nd round WR. My hope is a WR that is NFL ready as far as route running and concept understanding. I agree on MLB. I think we got to have a defensive general. Obvious a Kuechly clone would be nice. I hope that Morgan isn't just talking and lands us some players that can improve this team.
-
Best route runner, good hands and smart? Which one would you choose?
-
Of course, any particular names that come to mind. Especially those that are necessarily 1st round picks.
-
So now that the Super Bowl is over. The NFL Combine is next. Who do you want to see perform at the combine? A lot of players move up or down at the Combine.
-
If you saw the movie Moneyball some of the things they did made sense, but MLB players can be more heady players without that killer instinct that some players have in NFL. Every year players come from the lower rounds and flourish in the NFL. Analytics say they are nothing to write home about and yet they make a career for themselves. When was the last time we hit on a lower round player? Andrew Norwell? Someone who was a starter and not some player that lasted 3 years on the team but never played. I seriously cannot think of one player since Norwell. I am hoping that we draft, especially in the lower rounds, players that have an edge but might not have the greatest 40. I love and hate at the same time Pachero. The man runs like a beast. How in the hell did he drop to the 7th round. This is what we have to get back to, to become relevant again. Bottom line analytics should not be a part of how our draft board is set up.
-
Take the option and hopefully he plays well until the trade deadline and trade him for picks.
-
You can't measure DOG in analytics. This isn't Moneyball. They throw analytics around like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. While it has its positives it shouldn't be the go-to reason for any decision in the NFL. Those analytics are the reason the Lions are home watching the Super Bowl instead of playing in it.
-
This is why I don't think we are in bad shape when it comes to our O-line. We just need to get back to a normal blocking scheme instead of zone blocking crap. I think that if we go back to a straight up blocking scheme all our O-line problems will disappear. I've said it numerous times, It just doesn't make sense that our O-line was supposed to be a strength in 2023 and they turned out to be awful. I blame it on the scheme not the players, at least to a point. Between injuries and having to learn a new scheme didn't help us at all. I want us to find a Pacheco style running back. This guy fell to the 7th round. He's one of the hardest running backs I have seen in football in a long time. The guy just doesn't go down on the first hit. Put that type of player in a straight up blocking scheme and you're going to have a 1000+ Yd Running Back.
-
One I said someone like Mike Evans not necessarily him. I'm sure we can entice a top tier WR FA to come here. 6 wins is a pessimistic outlook. But that's my opinion. Houston turned it around in one season so it's not out of the realm of possibility.
