Please please please pick one of the OT. I'll die if we pick anything else - especially a QB!

An overall look at who we may pick at 5/6. Fun read.... https://www.panthers.com/news/2022-mock-draft-report-1-0-charles-cross-ahmad-gardner CHARLOTTE - It's officially Mock Draft season for the Panthers. With the Senior Bowl practices coming next week, media outlets have started rolling out their predictions for the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, scheduled for the end of April in Las Vegas. Take a look at the analysis from each outlet as the majority of writers focused in on Charles Cross, a junior offensive tackle out of Mississippi State. NFL.com CB Ahmad Gardner Cincinnati DANIEL JEREMIAH: The Panthers will likely have their pick of any quarterback in the draft class, but, barring an unexpected move, they're committed (at least financially) to Sam Darnold for one more season. Gardner is the most gifted cornerback in the draft and would team with Carolina's 2021 first-rounder, Jaycee Horn, to give the Panthers the best young duo in the NFL. ESPN.com OT Charles Cross Mississippi State MEL KIPER JR.: This is an easy call based on Carolina's biggest weakness: It has to get a better left tackle. The Panthers ranked last in the league in yards per play (4.6) and 28th in sacks allowed (52). They went into the season with journeyman Cameron Erving manning the spot and finished with rookie third-rounder Brady Christensen filling in. Taylor Moton is a really solid right tackle, but they can upgrade the left side with this pick. Cross took a big leap in 2021, allowing just a single sack while playing in a pass-happy Mike Leach offense. He can be a big-time NFL left tackle. This isn't a reach pick. The Panthers need to hit here because they don't have second- or third-round picks due to trades for quarterback Sam Darnold and cornerback CJ Henderson. This is a massive draft for coach Matt Rhule, who fired his offensive coordinator and might have to make the playoffs in 2022 to keep his job. CBS Sports OT Charles Cross Mississippi State RYAN WILSON: Quarterback makes all the sense in the world here, but it's important to remember these two words: Fit matters. Put Mac Jones on the the Jets and he probably looks a lot more like Zach Wilson than a legit Rookie of the Year candidate. So knowing that, the Panthers bolster the offensive line and perhaps find their next franchise QB via free agency or a trade. Cross is a high-upside athletic offensive tackle who had a strong season for Mississippi State. PFF OT Charles Cross Mississippi State TREVOR SIKKEMA: It has got to be an offensive line selection for the Carolina Panthers — it just has to be. They’ll likely try to add some veteran talent at interior offensive line during free agency, but left tackle Cam Erving (56.0 PFF grade in 2021) and left guard Pat Elflien (50.1) can’t be counted on again. Cross is still fine-tuning his craft, but he has really smooth movement for a player of his size. After flashing traits in his first year as a starter in 2020, he gave up only 16 pressures on 719 pass-blocking snaps this past season. It's hard to not think a great NFL career is ahead of him. Athletic OT Charles Cross Mississippi State DANE BRUGLER: If the Panthers strike out on their quarterback options in free agency and on the trade market, this could be the spot where we see the first quarterback drafted. This is Carolina’s only draft pick in the top 100, putting even more pressure on Matt Rhule and the organization to get this selection right. Cross is talented enough to be OT1 on some team’s draft boards. He has the athleticism and movement patterns to be comfortable pass-blocking on an island, and his hands are well-timed and precise. Cross should be able to start from day one as a rookie. Draft Network OT Charles Cross Mississippi State BRYAN PEREZ: Carolina has been a popular landing spot for a quarterback in a lot of mock drafts, but I don’t think that’s the direction they’re going to take. Instead, they focus on the offensive line here with Cross, who’s a bit of an overlooked name at the top of the offensive tackle rankings. He’s a plus athlete but needs to get a little stronger before he can be considered a player with the same kind of upside as Ekwonu and Neal. Regardless, he’d be an immediate starter (and upgrade) for Matt Rhule and the Panthers.

Saw this on yahoo. Might be bs but it’s fun to stir the pot!

Panthers reportedly ‘standing pat’ with HC Matt Rhule for 2022 Anthony Rizzuti Sat, December 25, 2021, 3:07 PM For many of you not-so-merry Carolina Panthers fans, seeing head coach Matt Rhule back on the sidelines in 2022 probably wasn’t on your wishlists. Well, like another pair of socks, you might just be getting it anyway. According to CBS Sports senior NFL insider Jonathan Jones, the Panthers “will be standing pat this offseason” with Rhule. Given Jones’ rock-solid past as the team beat writer for The Charlotte Observer, this report is likely as credible as they come.

Official Panthers at Cardinals GameDay thread

They called a meaningless penalty on AZ just so they don’t look like they are all in on AZ. 10 more penalties on CAR that actually do matter and affect the outcome of the game coming up. -

Refs not liking CAR winning. -
That's what no one is talking about. Everyone is treating Cam as the savior that's going to rescue our season and everything is going to be awesome, and I certain hope that's the case and I'll be pulling hard for Cam. That said, he may get behind center and he gets blown up and end up running for his life and it turns into a poo show. He's obviously more mobile than Sam but it's going to be interesting how this turns out....

Per Gantt Rhule doesn’t want to get into too much Jets game talk, but did say at this point, the starting OL would be the one he put on the field last night (Erving/Elflein/Paradis/Miller/Moton). Per Newton Matt Rhule plans to go into the Panthers opener vs the Jets with the starting offensive line of LT Cameron Erving, LG Pat Elflein, C Matt Paradis, RG John Miller, RT Taylor Moton. God help us.

OK good point - way to early to say a bust. You'd think he'd be a shoe in at LT from day 1...at least that's how they graded him...
-
What's going on with Penei Sewell? I'm hearing he isn't doing that well right now? Some even saying a bust? Anyone hearing similar things? Maybe we dodge a bullet here...
-
Wilson scores again. Holy poo this kid looks good. Way better release than Fields who has a bit of a long windup
-
Anyone watching the Jets? Wilson looking better than Fields IMO.
-
Good point. Nothing worse than a QB who can barely get it done but win enough games to be decent and get stuck in draft purgatory...

How about PFF? https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-2021-nfl-free-agency-live-deal-grader-grading-tracking-every-free-agent-signing CAROLINA PANTHERS G Pat Elflein: Three years, $13.5 million ($6 million guaranteed) Grade: Poor Things started out well enough for Elflein as a rookie with the Minnesota Vikings back in 2017, but it’s been downhill since then. The former Ohio State Buckeye has been a revolving door in pass protection, failing to clear a 50.0 pass-blocking grade in any of the past three seasons. He is one of just three guards in the league allowing a pressure rate above 8.0% on at least 500 pass-blocking snaps since 2018. It’s difficult to project a major turnaround in 2021. The Vikings were comfortable waiving Elflein during the 2020 season despite their guards combining for the worst pass-blocking grade in the NFL — a dreadful 37.2 mark across the roster. Carolina apparently values his ability to play multiple positions on the interior, but it’s fair to wonder if Minnesota kept moving him around just to see if he could play anywhere, not because he was solid at several spots. Carolina is probably still working on a long-term deal for right tackle Taylor Moton and is set to lose left tackle Russell Okung to free agency, making this deal even more of a head-scratcher. T Cam Erving: Two years, $10 million ($8 million guaranteed) Grade: Below Average The Panthers needed to add depth to their offensive line given the uncertainty throughout the unit heading into this offseason. Erving certainly provides plenty of experience both as a starter and as a reserve, with over 3,000 career offensive snaps to his name since being drafted in the first round back in 2015. The problem is that Erving's experience has never come in the form of quality play. A 2020 season in which he started just five games for the Dallas Cowboys before going down with injury represented the best year of his career from a grading standpoint (58.0 overall grade). It was the first time in his NFL career with a PFF grade above 50.0, but it still would have ranked just 36th among qualifying left tackles had he played enough snaps to qualify. Even as a swing tackle, he’s not someone who Carolina should have much confidence in stepping into a starting role should an injury pop up. With Russell Okung set to hit free agency, it makes sense that the Panthers would want to solidify the tackle position, but they shouldn’t have much faith in Erving providing more than mid-level depth. The signing in a vacuum is fine, but with a handful of superior tackles recently released — Eric Fisher and Riley Reiff among them — you have to wonder if it would have been wise for Carolina to let the market play out a bit before working out a deal with a player who would most likely still be available in the second or even third wave of free agency.

Panthers sign OT Cameron Erving (2 years, $10 million; $6 million guaranteed): O'BRIEN Grade When grading the Pat Elflein signing, I wrote that the Vikings were laughing at the move because they waived Elflein in 2020. Now that the Panthers have signed Cameron Erving, I can say that numerous teams are laughing, namely every single franchise that has rostered Erving over the years. Frankly, Erving is a bad player. He's a replacement-level talent. He has experience, but that doesn't matter because it's nothing but bad experience. He's not even a good backup because there's no upside. With that in mind, there was no reason to pay Erving this sort of money. Any sort of guarantee is a mistake. Even six dollars - forget the million - would be too much. This signing deserves an F- grade. It's even worse than the Patriots' decision to overpay Jonnu Smith because Smith, at least, is a solid player.

Carolina Panthers will target offense in round one
CAPantherFan replied to Jeremy Igo's topic in Carolina Panthers
Any thoughts about these comments about D Henry? 4/2/16: At the combine, Henry declined to run the 40-yard dash, plus had a poor showing in the field drills. Teams also weren't blown away in his interviews. Still, this is a weak tight end class and Henry remains the favorite to be the first selected.
