Commentary said the 3rd and 6 may have been designed that way but if so I don’t understand why you call a play that doesn’t get you a first down if successful.
I mean Bryce had time. He wasn’t even pressured. The play was designed to gain enough yardage to make a 4th down more manageable. In short yardage situations, as opposed to our usual 3rd and long scenarios—where we often end up with 4th and long after a halfback draw—this approach was intended to improve our position.
With a bit more time, the quarterback could have hit Thielen for the first down. However, the play called for a quick release, and Mingo should have gained more yards after the catch (YAC). The defensive back was too close, which is why Thielen managed to get open just a split second later.
What deserves more attention is that there were no drops—all catchable balls were secured. The first down play to Thielen was especially noteworthy; it was a type of play I haven't seen from any Panthers offense before. It looked so effortless, as if we actually have offensive plays designed to spread the field effectively.

MHS's HALFTIME ANALYSIS
by MHS831
8/24/24
- Raym is doing great at C
- Brooks (#71) is doing a fine job at RG
- Marshall Jr has no mathematical way to make this roster/
- Plummer will suffice as the PS QB #3. I still do not think Dalton needs to plant any trees at his Charlotte home.
- Miles Sanders should not make the roster. He will, but when Brooks returns, we are going to dump him/trade him for a 7th. Boone is a solid PS player.
- Bootle was picked on the entire Buffalo TD drive. Not good for him.
- TE Sanders is the real deal.
- Matthews over Thomas as the third TE?
- Leota is quietly solid. DJ Johnson gets lost. Where is Barno? Still hurt?
- BC was in at LT--I think he should be our swing T--if Raym can play decent backup C, and he seems good so far--BC and Nijman give us solid depth on the outside.
- Zavala is a different player this year. I have yet to see him look confused or take a false step like last season.
- In the second half, Canales needs to get a ball to Legette. he does not need to go 2 weeks thinking about that drop.
- Considering the fact that we entered this draft with no first rounder, a good draft would have been finding 2 impact players. By the time the dust settles, we could have 4--Legette, Brooks, Sanders, and Wallace--I see all 4 starting soon.
I don't think you want to force anything right now, his time will come

Now if this first half don't get you pump for Week 1, I don't know what will

Have we ever had such a competent coach who knows how to run a 2 min offense, and I mean he didn't waste no timeouts either.

I see Thielen filling a role similar to that of Ricky Proehl.
DJ would be comparable to Smitty, while Legette could be seen as our version of Muhsin Muhammad.
Thielen was our main threat last year; sometimes the plays were specifically designed for him, and he still managed to rack up 1,000 yards despite the defense focusing on him.
Thielen has the potential to keep the defense honest, which should create more opportunities for other players, especially Diontae Johnson, who has a knack for finding space.
Right now, having veteran receivers like Thielen, who know how to get open, is a significant advantage for Young. Thielen can mentor the younger players and show them how it’s done.
ISM could very well be Smitty lite also, learning from these two, he has that nastiness about him.
I would cut Jamison to be honest to save a roster spot for offense, and I know we thin at DB but the potential in Coker vs a DB who constantly gets beat vs someone who can actually take the top off the defense is a differences for me at this stage.
