Tepper clearly wants to change the Panthers identity
CPcavedweller replied to Saca312's topic in Carolina Panthers
"Pray the defense holds up"? If you go for an offensive guy, it's more along the lines of "pray that the offense doesn't go up against an elite defense". How many Super Bowls has Andy Reid won? How many times has he had a Top 5 offense? How many times has the team with the better defense lost the Super Bowl? Remember 2021? Kansas City comes in flying high and were completely grounded by the team with the better defense? 2019? Rams come in and score THREE points because they went up against a better defense. How about the Dolphins collapse this year? EPIC. Now how about the 49er's? Offensive minded head coach who goes with a ground and pound style game plan and allocates resources to defense. They are the best team in football right now with a 7th round pick at QB. You can get an offensive minded coach with an INNOVATIVE RUN GAME that is very much smash mouth and finesse, yet allocate resources to defense, and still win championships. You don't have to get NERD MCDANIEL. You don't have to get Nathaniel Hackett (that went well). The best teams in the NFL right now, aside from the Chiefs, are teams that allocated far more resources to defense. Look at the Eagles (smashmouth, finesse offense), 49er's (smash mouth, finesse), Bills (smash mouth, run and gun), Bengals (smash mouth, run and gun type offense). To be elite, you have to be elite running the ball. To be elite throwing the ball, you need an offensive line that can protect. Ours was 21st in the league in pass block win rate and I saw Ickey get beat what seemed like every other pass pro. The point is, Tepper wants to change identity to sell tickets, not to win Championships. If you want to win Championships, you play defense and have an offense predicated on running the ball, whether it's in space or hard nosed. If you can't run the ball, when you face an elite defense you're going to be screwed. So I'm sure the fans will get what they want. Wilks deserves the job. Going 6-6 after firing 7 coaches and rotating three QB's including a guy who should be in the USFL? Furthermore, the Panthers copy cat in Buffalo has shown what a defensive minded head coach can do. Oddly enough, Wilks worked with McDermott for quite a while. I'd say he's more like McDermott and I'd like to see what he and Fitterer could do. -
Under No Circumstances Should We Trade a Haul for a QB/Pick
CPcavedweller replied to tukafan21's topic in Carolina Panthers
The Broncos may be willing to offload Wilson for that. Wilson THRIVES in the scheme we were running this year. Play action pass with some improvisation and receivers who will operate the scramble drill. He's also a leader, as cringy as it can be. If we could get Wilson, even with his contract, for a 2nd I think you take it. Get Wilson, re-sign Foreman, draft a TE and third receiver, re-sign Bozeman... Could easily be the favorites of the South for the next three years. However I'm not giving up draft picks to take Stroud or Young. I'm also not drafting Richardson. His comp would be Josh Allen but Richardson doesn't have a ton of playing time and being a high pick will force him to play sooner rather than later. It's going to be a poo show, wherever he ends up. -

Them knowing what we want, it will probably be three firsts, two seconds, and a 5th. We may as well ask for Justin Fields and let them take Stroud. -

Have you done anything other than look at his stat lines? He can run, that's about it. Slow to read defenses, has to see a guy open. The best thing the Panthers could do is build a core of talent and develop Corral behind Darnold for another year or two. Want to know why Purdy is doing well? He was a four year starter in college, played in a pro style offense, and the 49er's core of talent is quite possibly the highest in the NFL. We will send another 8 picks away looking for a savior QB before we do the sensible thing and build an offensive scheme with a core of elite talent around a guy who can LEAD an offense. If Corral were with the 49er's I feel like he would be playing similar to how Purdy is as well but Purdy is already reading defenses better than Justin Fields and he was a 7th round pick. Save the picks, take BPA/offensive talent at WR and TE in the first two picks. If there is a QB with a lot of college experience who may be middle of the road in terms of tangible traits, take him in the 4th or later and see what you got. There is something to be said for playing time in college and how it translates to the NFL. -
It's crazy to think that the Atlanta game came back to kill us here. Obviously some mistakes in this game late with Ickey wiffing on a pass block, Henderson just completely forgetting how to football, and a questionable holding call on special teams, but it was the Atlanta game. It was always going to be because of how dramatic a finish it was. If we didn't have Rhule in New York and against Cleveland we may have won those games as well. I think Darnold can be re-signed and I think we can develop the core of this team now though. To have a game come down to this against playoff form Tom Brady with Darnold throwing for 300+ and 3 touchdowns with little to no running game, secures my belief that we can be a playoff team with Darnold so long as we get some help in weaponry. You throw a rookie like Levis or Richardson on this team and we are back to winning 4 games while giving up an opportunity for guys like Mayer and Hyatt who have a chance to be real stars in the NFL.

You think Wilks, one of the best defensive play callers in the NFL, doesn't know this? It's the safeties job to make the right read and instead of taking Evans he took the underneath route.
-
J No is number 6...that was Henderson, twice.
-
It's just Henderson...everyone else is fine. At this point put in Norman. Can't be any worse.
-
CJ Henderson needs to be gone.
-
Tampa is playing single high safety with every other player within 8 yards of the LOS. It really is a testament to Darnold and the offensive line to get the protections right and deliver an accurate ball with the pocket really collapsing around you each snap. Darnold living up to that 3rd overall pick. I think he's now at 8 or 9 touchdowns to 1 interception and probably a 124 passer rating this year. Amazing what not having a crutch like CMC can do to a team like this. Run and gun baby.
-
Darnolddddd...LFG boys and girls.
-
And waste yet another pick. We already have Corral with a 3rd and 4th round pick. Those would be wasted as would the picks we gave up for Darnold. The picks for Teddy and Baker are already a loss. Then you draft yet another guy? To presumably replace a guy playing like a Top 3 pick in his 5th year? 5 years in NFL life used to be nothing for a QB. Darnold played for ADAM GASE and MATT RHULE, two of the four worst coaches of the past 10 years in the NFL. You draft Mayer and Hyatt to give you a true superstar tight end and 3rd receiver who can get DJ Moore one on one coverages and go with Darnold and Corral.
-
I'm telling y'all, we don't need to take a QB in the first 4 rounds. Darnold finally got to sit, now has a competent staff, and he is cooking.
-
Darnold playing like a number three overall pick in his 5th year now. That was a masterclass from the OC to the OL, to the QB. Best Panthers drive I've seen in a long time.
-
This is probably the most excited I've been for a Panthers game since...2018? 2019? Didn't care for Rhule, the team didn't seem to care either. The energy is back. Greg Olsen not being able to hide his Panthers Fandom in the opening discussions with a smile when the Panthers and Wilkes possibly making the playoffs was talked about. Win or lose, I think we should all take a moment to appreciate the fact that Wilkes has given us, and the staff and yes...Sam Darnold...meaningful January football.

MMQB: Breer on Wilks/potential OC candidate
CPcavedweller replied to *FreeFua*'s topic in Carolina Panthers
Have you watched him? He's garbage. There were signs with Josh Allen including his ability to actually hit those deep shots, off platform dart throws to a point, etc. I've seen absolutely none of that from Richardson. It's akin to taking Zach Wilson for me. You see his potential and ignore the bad things. Yall wanna waste a first round pick on a project when we already have one in Corral, go ahead. I guess I'll ride but I'm going to bitch the whole way so you better turn the radio up. -

If we draft Anthony Richardson for anything other than a TE conversion I quit. Dude can't hit the ocean if he fell out of a damn boat. No. He's not Josh Allem v 2.0. -
What QB is worth it beyond Young and Stroud? If you draft a QB after them you're still in the "throwing poo at the wall to see what sticks". The Panthers NEED to go BPA in the first round which likely is Mayer at our draft position. We need a tight end, desperately. We need a third receiver who can take the top off a defense, desperately. You take Mayer and you take Hyatt. You've sent 9 draft picks away since 2019 to QB's and a few of them may have landed with Darnold so see where your investment stands before you sell at a loss just to buy another loser QB in Levis or Anthony Richardson.

David Tepper is keen on Will Levis
CPcavedweller replied to Chris Smitty's topic in Carolina Panthers
Someone tell this man to GTFO of the front office before we make another mistake. Build out the core of the roster and then worry about QB. If we get a serviceable OC, draft an elite tight end and 3rd receiver, Darnold will be much, much better than Levis. Leave it alone TEPPER. Mayer and Hyatt in rounds 1 and 2. I watch a lot of college football and the only dudes after Stroud and Young are depth pieces. I may even throw Sam Hartman a lifeline in the 6th round before I'd consider Levis. Finish building the roster, if Sam can't cut it with these guys, then move along. Dudes playing his best ball in this formula and of course Tepper would want to go changing poo. -
Our version of being like Dallas?
CPcavedweller replied to Brooklyn 3.0's topic in Carolina Panthers
Who talks about 2015 like it was yesterday? How old are you? 7 years isn't really all that long, honestly. -
Panthers working out Josh Norman today
CPcavedweller replied to TheCasillas's topic in Carolina Panthers
He was great with Steve Wilks in the past. He's old, but was never all that fast to begin with. Probably better than the options already on the team though. This whole season has been weird so...LFGGGGG Bring on the weirdness. -
His two head coaches have been ADAM GASE and MATT RHULE. Arguably two of the worst NFL head coaches since the year 2000. If you put him in Los Angeles with the Rams what would mcvay get out of him? Dude could probably win a Super Bowl and look elite doing it. The issue isn't Darnold. And since you're an expert, who do you propose we draft to replace him? How many picks do you suppose we send to San Fransisco for a guy with the same problems in Jimmy G? There are no free agent QB's who will be better and no one we can draft will have a higher ceiling. Unless you want Anthony...barf...Richardson. Or worse...Will Levis... We need to a build a team and see what Darnold can do with quality tight ends, a quality 3rd receiver, and a competent (the first of his career) coaching staff. The thing about starting 3-0 last year was our offense was built around CMC. Now our offense is far more generic and is not reliant on a single player to work, thus this streak is not an anomaly like that was. We aren't replacing Darnold because we shouldn't. There is no one out there we can get, or should get, who is going to be better in the short or long term, especially in this draft. You put a mew QB in amd you have the same issues of the worst tight ends in the league and two quality receivers.
